Content note: This post discusses financial abuse.

Financial abuse can involve controlling access to financial resources, limiting employment opportunities, creating debt, restricting financial decision-making or making it difficult for someone to build financial independence.

While relatively few Canadians identified financial abuse when defining domestic abuse, new research from The Allstate Foundation of Canada suggests many are familiar with behaviours associated with it when presented with specific examples.

Building awareness of financial abuse helps strengthen understanding of a form of abuse that is often overlooked, despite its significant impact on a person's choices, independence and future.

Financial barriers can affect the options available to survivors and their ability to access safety and stability. Through the National Emergency Survivor Support (NESS) Fund, our partners at YWCA Canada provide emergency financial assistance to help address immediate needs and expand options for survivors.

Content note: This post discusses domestic abuse.

When Canadians were asked to define domestic abuse in their own words, 81% identified physical abuse, while only 9% identified financial abuse, according to research from The Allstate Foundation of Canada.

These findings highlight the importance of increasing awareness of the many ways abuse can show up. Financial abuse can affect a survivor's access to money, transportation, housing and other resources, creating barriers that are often overlooked.

Addressing these barriers requires community-led solutions. Shelter Movers is one example. Through free moving and storage services, the organization helps reduce logistical and financial barriers that survivors may face when transitioning to safety, expanding access to options during a critical time.

Content note: This post discusses domestic abuse and barriers to safety.

Domestic abuse affects individuals, families and communities across Canada.

New research commissioned by The Allstate Foundation of Canada found that more than half of Canadians have personally experienced some form of domestic abuse, while only one in four reported having no direct or indirect experience with abuse.

As part of The Allstate Foundation of Canada's focus on disrupting the cycle of domestic abuse, we're learning alongside and amplifying the expertise of our charity partners who are leading survivor-centred work that increases safety, strengthens choice and supports long-term stability.
