Looking back at my Footsteps The Annoucement
Robert A. (“Bob”) Gascon began his career in the early 1980s, spending eight years with a financial institution before becoming a mortgage broker in 1987.
In the mid-1990s, he successfully built and sold his first Mortgage Brokerage to a financial institution. (Redwood Mortgage Funding)
Bob is a founding member of the Canadian Mortgage Professionals (CMP) and has served two terms as Treasurer. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the organization’s Service Award.
He was also elected to the Canadian Mortgage Brokers Association/Ontario (CMBA) where he likewise served two terms as Treasurer and received its Service Award.
Continuing his entrepreneurial path, Bob later established a Mortgage Administration Company, which he grew and ultimately sold to a hedge fund in 2022. (Raven Financial Services)

Looking back at my Footsteps The Giant

Remember those years in the early nineties of a tattered housing and mortgage market, it was hard work but fun.

With a small team at the time, 35 Brokers, I decided to blitz the GTA, with a marketing campaign, to navigate everyone through tough times.

The campaign was called A Giant and Growing.

The plan was for everyone to drop flyers, business cards and brochures, into every real Estate office, near you, lawyer’s offices, accountants, professionals, everyone in your local area. Mail as many as you could afford. When the time was right, and everyone was loaded up with ammunition, over the top we went. Excitement flared, sprits rose, and our little paper tiger attacked dropping 20 thousand pieces of paper in one week.

An issue arouse as you can see from the brochure on the trunk of the tree. An old friend and I missed something when we phto shopped the brochure.

Take a good look, see if you can connect the dots, the tree trunk and a giant and growing.

Now that you have seen it, get your mind out of the gutter. Yes, the giant was growing, and the campaign took on a life of its own, by amplifying a message in a way that no one could predict. It was a raging success by a small, overlooked error which created a hilarious buzz. Business picked up. Fun times in tough times.

Interesting that the message in the brochure, if you can stop looking at the tree, is the same thirty years later.

Looking back at my Footsteps Forget Me Not

Way back in the day, I would mail my contact base four times a year. One year mailing 15 thousand. I added the client, referral source, the Lawyer, Real Estate Agent and all Professionals involved in the file to my contact base.

In the Spring of each year, I would mail a pack of personalized seeds. Also dropping them in as many mailboxes as I could.

Forget-Me-Nots are a perennial flower with sky blue blossoms with white centers. Perfect for rock gardens, beds, and borders. This variety reseeds freely, allowing it to spread quickly.

The idea was, once planted, it would last long beyond the mailing. The gardener would always remember. Two memorable calls come to mind.

One person said stop sending me those flower packs, they are like an invasive species, they are all over the garden and growing through the fence into the neighbor’s yard and cannot be stopped!

The other call was more irate, saying stop sending me those rotten, good for nothing seed packs because they never ever grow! So, stop sending! Yes, the word stop was said multiple times. OOOOPS

When I walk past a home with a garden full of Forget-Me-Nots I wonder if I left a part of my mortgage legacy behind. Flyers get tossed, business cards get tossed, emails get deleted, but a pack of seeds get tossed into the everything drawer or passed on. A fun thing.

I was thinking about mailing out packs of turnips, cabbage, rhubarb, onions, beans, and parsley this year.

Many years ago, when business was slow, I would print out 100 mortgage flyers and leave my office or home and go door to door dropping them into mailboxes.
One hot Sunday, I asked my two young kids to help out. The oldest on one side of the street and the younger one with me. The reward was ice cream. Out of 100 flyers every two weeks I always got a few calls or a client.
Later, sitting in the ice cream store, my oldest said to my youngest “We are not doing Dad`s job anymore! “My youngest said yes, and in a young snarly sarcastic, annoyed agreeing voice that only a seven year could muster said yea and who is Bob any way.
It dawned on me at that moment, that my kids thought I delivered flyers for a living.
