Is your business about to cross $30,000? 📈 You may need a GST/HST number.

You stop being a "small supplier" and generally must register when your taxable sales go over $30,000:
1️⃣ in a single calendar quarter, or
2️⃣ over four consecutive calendar quarters.

💡 Under $30K? Registering voluntarily can let you claim input tax credits on the GST/HST you pay on business expenses.

Reliable AOC can register your business and set up your filings so nothing slips.

Driving for your business? 🚗 Your logbook is what backs up your vehicle expense claim.

The CRA expects you to separate business kilometres from personal ones. For every business trip, record:
📅 Date
📍 Destination
🎯 Purpose
🛣️ Kilometres driven

And note your odometer reading at the start and end of the year.

Without a logbook, your claim is hard to support if the CRA asks. Keep it as you go — a phone app works great.

Should you incorporate — or stay a sole proprietor? 🤔

It's one of the biggest decisions a growing business makes, and it's not just about tax.

👤 Sole proprietor: simple to run, profits taxed at your personal rate, and you're personally liable.
🏢 Corporation: access to the small-business tax rate on active income and generally limited liability — but more paperwork, including a separate corporate return.

The right answer depends on your income, your goals and how much profit you can leave in the business. We'll run the numbers with you.

Minimum wage went up in five provinces yesterday. If you run payroll, this is your reminder. 📢

Ontario $17.95 (up from $17.60)
Prince Edward Island $17.30
Nova Scotia $17.00
Manitoba $16.40
Saskatchewan $15.70

The detail that trips people up: the new rate applies to hours worked from October 1 — not to pay periods that happen to end after it. If your pay period straddles the date, you split the hours. Everything worked in September is paid at the old rate, everything from the 1st at the new one. Same cheque, two rates.

Four things worth doing before your next run:

🧮 Update payroll. New rate in the system before the next cycle, not after someone notices.
⏱️ Recheck your premiums. Overtime and stat holiday pay are calculated off the base rate, so they move with it. This is where quiet shortfalls hide.
📄 Review the paperwork. Employment contracts and any posted wage notices should reflect the new figure.
💬 Tell your team. They should see it on the pay stub, and hearing it from you first is better than them working it out themselves.

Also worth noting: special rates — students, liquor servers, home workers — follow their own schedules, so don't assume one blanket change covers everyone.

Underpaying by a few cents an hour doesn't feel like much. Across a team, across a year, with interest and penalties attached, it adds up to a real number — and it's entirely avoidable.

We'll set your payroll right.

Quarterly filer? Your GST/HST quarter closes today. Your return and payment are due October 31. 📅

That's the bit people miss: monthly and quarterly filers file and pay one month after the reporting period ends. It isn't file now, pay later. Both land on the same date, which is why a return that's technically "done" can still cost you interest.

Four things worth doing in the next few weeks:

🧾 Reconcile your sales. Match invoices to your books before you total anything. Finding a discrepancy now is a correction; finding it after filing is an amendment.

🏷️ Claim your ITCs. Input tax credits on business costs are the part most owners leave money on. If your receipts aren't organised, you're almost certainly under-claiming.

💳 Plan the payment. Know the number early enough to have the cash ready. GST/HST isn't really your money — you collected it on the CRA's behalf — but it's very easy to spend it by accident when it's sitting in your operating account.

📁 Keep the records. Receipts back up every claim you make. That matters at filing time and it matters a great deal more if anyone ever asks questions.

And if you're an annual filer, your date is different: generally three months after your fiscal year-end. Worth confirming which one you actually are — plenty of owners aren't sure.

Don't let the deadline sneak up. We'll file it for you.

Most CRA audits aren't random — they follow patterns. 🚩 Swipe for the five that get noticed most.

Repeated losses · Big income swings · Heavy cash · Above-average deductions · Late filings

None of these means you did something wrong. Real businesses tick these boxes all the time. What separates a quick answer from a long one is whether you can explain it with documents.

An audit isn't a verdict. It's a check.

The CRA changed how you register a business, and most people haven't noticed. 🏢

Since July 14, Business Registration Online only opens from inside a CRA account. No account, no registration — so identity verification now comes first.

And if you've never filed a Canadian return, or haven't filed in two years, you may need Form RC1 on paper instead.

Business number, GST/HST, payroll, import/export — we'll set it up properly the first time.

Q4 is here. Which means your year-end starts now, not in April. 📅

Here's the part most business owners learn the hard way: almost everything that shapes this year's tax bill has to happen before December 31. By the time you're sitting down with your accountant in the spring, the year is closed. You're not planning any more — you're reporting.

Three things worth sorting before the year closes:

✅ Get the books caught up. You can't make a decision about December if you don't know what happened in July. This is the one that blocks everything else.

✅ Review pay and dividends. Salary versus dividends, and how much of each, is a decision with a deadline. It affects your corporate tax, your personal tax, your RRSP room and your CPP. It cannot be fixed retroactively.

✅ Time your purchases. If you're planning to buy equipment, when you buy can matter as much as what you buy — especially with the new Productivity Mega Deduction on the table for assets acquired on or after September 15.

Then the calendar takes over:
🔹 Dec 31 — year-end for calendar-year corporations
🔹 End of February — T4 and T4A slips due
🔹 2–3 months after year-end — corporate balance owing
🔹 6 months after year-end — T2 return due

In January, the options are gone. In October, you still have all of them.

Book a year-end review.
