“Is my payout taxable?”

The honest answer is: it depends on who owns the policy and who pays the premium.

Disability: tax treatment changes based on how premiums are paid
Critical illness: if someone else funds it, ownership and beneficiary get messy
Corporate owned life insurance: naming the wrong beneficiary can create a tax problem your family finds out about too late

Same product. Different structure. Very different outcome.

Two people crossed the border.

One had no insurance. $80,000 hospital bill.
One had a policy. About $300,000 in claims paid.

Your MSP card stops working at the border.

Most people don’t skip life insurance because of the cost. They skip it because nobody explained it in plain language.

Work coverage ends with the job.
Bank mortgage insurance pays the bank, not your family.
Age and health decide your premium, so later costs more.

Held your whole life policy for 20+ years? Cashing it out may cost more tax than you expect.
The longer you hold a permanent policy, the lower its adjusted cost basis usually goes — and the more of that cash value CRA can treat as income at your full marginal rate.
Cancelling isn’t your only option. Reducing coverage, using dividends toward premiums, or a policy loan may keep the coverage alive. Each has trade-offs, including tax and the risk of the policy lapsing.

Signed up in five minutes at the bank? That speed has a cost.
Lender-sold mortgage coverage often reviews your medicals at claim time. Individually underwritten coverage reviews them upfront.
Book a review with a licensed advisor — and never cancel existing coverage before new coverage is in force.

Get 15% off on disability coverage for certain professions and group applications. Dentists, physicians and a few other occupation groups often sit in that category.

If that’s you, the difference over a 30-year working life is not small.

But the discount is the second thing to look at. The first is the wording.

Own-occupation coverage asks: can you still do your job? Not can you do a job. For a dentist with a hand injury, that single line is the whole policy. Broader wording can leave you with no benefit as long as you’re able to work somewhere else.

Ask which wording you’re being offered before you ask what it costs.

Eligibility and rates vary by carrier and occupation. An advisor can confirm what applies to you.

If you get hurt on the job site, workers’ compensation steps in.

If you tear a rotator cuff moving a couch on a Saturday — or you’re diagnosed with something that has nothing to do with work at all — it doesn’t.

That’s the gap most tradespeople don’t find out about until they’re already in it. And illness, not workplace accident, is behind a large share of long-term work absences.

Personal disability coverage replaces a portion of your income regardless of where the injury or illness happened. It’s not tied to your employer, so it stays with you when you change jobs or go out on your own.

Two things to ask about before you sign anything: how the policy defines “unable to work,” and how long you have to wait before benefits start.

Talk to a licensed advisor about what fits your trade.
