When do my children need to file income tax?

This has been a HOT TOPIC, this tax season.

Your child needs to file their own income tax when any of the following applies:

1. Turn 18 and have income. As soon as your child turns 18, CRA no longer considers them an eligible dependent. Which means, they MUST file their own income tax. This includes, the child claiming their portion of unclaimed medical expenses.

2. When they begin going to College or University, even if you have paid for your child's education. The tax slips WILL come in the child's name. The Child can transfer the education credits to you upon filing their income tax. However the claim can not be made under the parents name until the child's return has been filed first.

3. They have trust income, investment income, death benefit etc. If you are receiving a CRA tax slip - typically a T3, T5 or T4A, you need to file a tax return for your child whom is under 18.

** Important ** when your child turns 18 in the middle of a tax year, your marital status changes mid tax year, you move from rural to municipal property - these ALL affect your child care benefit and Carbon rebate. ALWAYS - change your address online with CRA immediately after these changes happen. Otherwise, after your taxes are filed, you will receive a bill with CRA claiming their prepaid funds back. (Note - this only happens the odd time with a child who turns 18 mid year, if you don't notice a change in your payments monthly, take action).

Have you filed your Income Tax, were expecting a refund, and now you have a balance due?

Now your thinking, "what the flip!"

Items that may have caused this:

1. Did you receive a tax slip after you've already filed your income tax return?

This is happening allot with T5's and other investment slips. If you hold stocks, or investments you are one of the people that should be waiting until April 15 to file. A late slip depending on your capital gains can dramatically affect your Tax filing. Wait to be safe :)

2. Did your employer notify your department of a duplicate submission on the CRA site?

We are seeing a huge lag in slips being amended or slips being double posted to individual CRA accounts. What this means is when your Company uploads the T4 submissions, they either had an error and resubmitted creating a double submission OR they amended your slip and CRA sucks so they haven't removed the original. CRA's AI system will then adjust your return manually. Double check with your Company if this is accurate. If it's not, wait 3 weeks and then check your CRA system again for the re-assessment to auto correct. You may need to reach back out to your tax professional for assistance if this is not corrected.

3. Did your marital status change in 2025?

If your marital status changed in 2025, your CCB, Carbon tax and other government benefits will be adjusted to reflect a COMBINED income. Sadly, this means you have received an incorrect amount of government benefits up until the date of change. Be prepared to pay this back to CRA. OR get ahead of the repayment and notify CRA when the change happens so they can adjust your monthly amounts.

As publicity around CRA filing deadline of April 30, 26 has increased this year - I want to remind everyone of some important additional details they leave out :)

1. April 30, 2026 is the deadline to file and pay any tax amounts due. If you do not rely on CCB or OAS and you typically do not owe money, don't panic - May is OK.

2. Self employed individuals have until; June 15, 2026. HOWEVER - you must have your tax balance due paid by April 30, 2026. CRA has to honor any installments in your account before the deadline. If your stuff isn't ready, prepay funds into your CRA account, when you file before June 15, 2026. You will not pay a penalty on your balance owed.

3. CRA is ramping up audits on employment expenses, specifically relating to mileage and phone's. Remember if you have a T2200 for your phone. DO NOT claim the full amount you've paid all year. You do not work 100% of the time, which means your phone bill claim should be adjusted to reflect this.

The penalty amounts CRA has been imposing are BRUTAL and scream desperation for funds. The amount of time it is taking them to respond to open reviews is insanely unreasonable. Keep this in mind when you file moving forward.

Penalty amounts:

Late-filing penalty
- 5% of your 2025 balance owing, plus
- 1% of your 2025 balance owing for each full month late (up to 12 months)

Repeated late filing penalty
- 10% of your 2025 balance owing, plus
- 2% of your 2025 balance owing for each full month late (up to 20 months) if you were penalized in 2022, 2023, or 2024 and received a demand to file.

The worst penalty I have seen is relating to individuals filing to early and missing income or a slip on their 2025 return and also missed reporting income in 2022, 2023, or 2024. Resulting of fines, upwards of $4000.

In most cases if CRA deems you to make a false statement or omit information on your 2025 return, either knowingly or through gross negligence - they aren't holding back.

This information is not to provide fear based knowledge to back CRA's ridiculously unreasonable dictatorship rules. It's to give you knowledge to make smart decisions on your 2025 return, as well as to plan for tax balances owed and strategies entering your 2026 tax year.

👩🏻‍💻 Tax season is coming to an end! If you own a home or are planning to buy, here are a few things worth keeping in mind:

🏡 If you’re eligible, RRSP savings may be accessed for a down payment through the Home Buyers’ Plan
📄 Your Notice of Assessment is often an important document in the mortgage process
💳 If you’re self-employed, up-to-date income documents matter
📲 A tax refund can be a helpful tool for savings, debt reduction, or future home plans

❤️ Even if you’re not buying right away, getting organized during tax season can put you in a stronger position later.

As a Business owner and an individual who works in bookkeeping & taxes. I work with many different client's bank accounts.

Out of all the banks I work with, my number one recommended bank will always be ATB Financial . ATB's platform is extremely user friendly. They make it extremely easy to navigate as an owner of a business as well as a personal client. Many often feel they must bank with some of the more established banks such as RBC, CIBC, Scotia or TD etc.

ATB is an Alberta based company. The ability to connect with a representative when you need help is MUCH easier. The ability to pull transaction records and sync up to multiple bookkeeping platforms is a total perk. You may think based on your business income threshold you need to be with a different branch.

I would however, urge you to remember a bank is a bank no matter the amount of money you are moving through it. The fee's at ATB are fair and competitive. The systems they have evolved into are some of the most user friendly I've seen across all the banks.

It's important for growing Businesses and all Sole Proprietors to keep the bank they choose in the forefront of your mind.

(This message is not sponsored by ATB it is a personal opinion of my own).
