Happy Birthday to Paul, our ex-Teacher Photoshop guy (which he might have too much fun with) and the embodiment of 'not everyone in finance starts in finance'.

Before joining our practice in 2022, Paul worked in both education and healthcare as a teacher and a PSW working with adults with disabilities.

That background shows up in how he works with clients today.

Paul has a natural ability to break down complex financial concepts.

Whether it's tax, estate planning, insurance, or how the markets work - he breaks it down for clients into clear, understandable conversations.

He develops financial systems for clients, so they know exactly where they are in their retirement and ensures their assets are protected when they are not in the best of health.

Ten years ago this was my youngest son getting his picture with Sydney Crosby (or at least the cardboard cutout of his hockey hero)

The picture was taken right before he went on the ice for the first time to skate. Yup, I was that dad! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Next season, he will be entering into his first year of body checking, which brings on a whole new level of anxiety for hockey parents - IYKYK.

Much like when I played at my son's age, ER visits for broken bones, sprains, strains and of course concussions were not uncommon.

Luckily, most concussions in hockey (and most youth sports) are minor.

๐‘ฉ๐’–๐’• ๐’˜๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’๐’–๐’• ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’๐’๐’†๐’” ๐’•๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’‚๐’“๐’†๐’โ€™๐’• ๐’Ž๐’Š๐’๐’๐’“?

'Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) from an external source' is one of 26 conditions that are covered in a Child Critical Illness Insurance policy.

Although minor concussions are not considered to qualify as a ABI - I did ask 3 separate underwriters if the concussion that Sydney Crosby suffered in 2011 would have qualified - and the answer was unanimously confirmed that ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐.

Crosby missed almost two years of hockey due to ongoing symptoms from his ABI.

When my son was 2 years old, I purchased a child CI policy for him as a 'happiness hedge' โ€“ If something happens, (any one of 26 covered conditions) we will receive a significant financial payout.

If nothing happens, we will get back most of the premiums paid on his 25th birthday.

Whether that money goes back into my portfolio, pays off a school loan or as a down payment on a condo, we have options.

Conservatively, after team dues, development, equipment costs, prevention and travel I can say we spend $15k on kids sports every year.

How much is peace of mind worth to me to know there is a plan for my son if an accident on the ice were to happen?

Adrian started with IG Wealth Management in 2004 and immediately found his niche helping clients with their retirement, tax and estate planning in the Greater Toronto Area. In 2009 Adrian moved into the role as Division Manager and Associate Branch Manager. During that time, he helped to get a better understanding of the oversight and support that IG provides to its clients. In 2019, Adrian stepped down as Division Manger to focus more on clients and their families.

Giving back to the community is very important to Adrian. He has served in executive roles with the Rotary Club of Scarborough Bluffs, Epilepsy Durham Region, CHIP Charitable Services and Rouge Valley Hospitalโ€™s board of directors.

They didnโ€™t want to talk about it at first. Not because they didnโ€™t trust me. It was simply because some conversations are just hard to have out loud.

โžก Late 50s couple.
โžก Good savers.
โžก Strong pensions.

But one of them had been recently coming to grips with an early diagnosis. Nothing immediate. Nothing catastrophic. But enough to change how we needed to think about retirement.

Most retirement conversations start with:

โ€œHow much flexibility will you need if health changes faster than expected?โ€

Instead of assuming a perfect retirement timeline, we modeled three realities:
โ€ข Best case โ€” healthy, active retirement
โ€ข Realistic case โ€” gradual increase in medical and support needs
โ€ข Conservative case โ€” earlier than expected lifestyle adjustments

We looked at income sources that didnโ€™t require physical or stressful work.
We reviewed insurance options available to us.
We shifted some assets toward more predictable income streams.
We planned cash flow in a way that would let them hire help at home if needed.

The goal was to maximize independence.

A year later, they told me, โ€œWe feel like we can breathe about the future now.โ€

Thatโ€™s usually when I know the work mattered most.

Retirement isnโ€™t just about stopping work. Itโ€™s about making sure life keeps working even when health doesnโ€™t go exactly as planned.
