📁 Could someone find what they need if you couldn't tell them where to look?

You insure your home. You save for retirement. You make a will and name beneficiaries.

But there's another simple piece of financial organization that's easy to overlook: making sure the right person knows where to find important information if you're ever unable to provide it yourself.

Consider creating a secure “in case of emergency” financial file that identifies where to find things such as:

📌 Your will and powers of attorney.
📌 Insurance policy information.
📌 A list of the financial institutions you deal with.
📌 Pension and workplace benefit information.
📌 Contact details for your financial advisor, accountant and lawyer.
📌 Information about important bills and financial obligations.

This doesn't mean you should leave passwords or sensitive information somewhere easily accessible. It's more about creating a roadmap so the person you've trusted to help isn't starting from scratch.

And once you've created it? Tell the appropriate person where it is, and revisit it periodically as your financial life changes.

What should you be focusing on financially at 25, 35, 45 or 55?

There’s no universal answer, but the questions worth asking tend to change as you move through life.

➡️ In your 20s, it may be about building a strong foundation.
How do I balance paying down debt with saving? Should I contribute to an RRSP or TFSA? Do I have enough set aside for the unexpected? What happens financially if an illness or injury prevents me from working?

➡️ In your 30s and 40s, there may be more competing priorities.
How much should go toward the mortgage versus investments? Are we saving enough for our children’s education? Does our insurance still reflect what our family depends on us for? Are we making the most of our income today while still preparing for the future?
