Early on, I thought leadership was about how many people were looking to you.

The longer I do this, the more I believe it's the opposite. The real measure isn't who follows you, it's who's growing because of you. The teammate who leaves a conversation a little more confident. The person who takes on something this year they wouldn't have tried last year.

That kind of influence is quieter. It rarely shows up in a headline. But it's the part of the work that actually lasts.

Micromanagement often starts with good intentions: wanting things done well, on time, and with care.

But when control replaces clarity, teams can start moving slower. Trust weakens. Decisions wait. Ownership becomes harder to feel.

Strong leadership creates room for judgment while still setting clear expectations.

Clarity, support and accountability build far more trust than constant control.
