Community Partner Spotlight: Lambton College and the Hub for Sustainable Food Innovation (HSFI)
Lambton College is launching the Hub for Sustainable Food Innovation (HSFI) - a program designed to address one of Canada's most pressing challenges: the critical workforce shortage in our food sector.
To put the scale of the challenge in perspective, Canada's food and beverage manufacturing sector must attract and train roughly 142,000 new workers (nearly 50% of today's workforce) by 2030 to remain competitive. In Sarnia-Lambton, the sustainable food industry has been identified as a priority growth sector, making this initiative both timely and significant.
Over the next three years, HSFI aims to provide 600 students with hands-on experience through curriculum-embedded capstone projects and paid applied research positions. Students will be equipped with job-ready skills in sustainable food production, automation, data analytics, food safety, and process optimization.
What makes the HSFI especially impactful is how its projects help make food production both more sustainable and more accessible. On the environmental side, projects focus on reducing waste and improving efficiency - through automation, sustainable packaging, better energy and water use, and bio-based ingredients. These innovations help lower emissions and reduce resource consumption. At the same time, these same improvements can lower production costs, extend shelf life, and reduce food loss - making food more affordable and accessible for more Canadians.
RBC Foundation is helping to support this work with a $225,000 donation over three years, helping bring HSFI to life and investing in the people, innovation, and partnerships that will shape a more sustainable and accessible food future for Canada.
Lambton College is located in Sarnia, Ontario, and has been empowering students since 1967 through strong community and industry partnerships.
