Getting ready for winter in Alberta? Your winter tires may do more than improve your winter driving. They could also help lower your insurance premium.

Many insurers offer a discount for qualifying winter tires, but there’s an important detail: the discount usually isn’t automatic.

Two things to know:

🔹 Tell your insurer: You may need to declare your winter tires, and some insurers may ask for proof of purchase or installation.

🔹 Check your tire type: Many insurers only give the discount for dedicated winter tires on all four wheels. All-season tires typically don’t qualify, and all-weather tires may not either, even with the mountain-snowflake symbol. Rules vary by insurer, so check before you buy.
