The Orange man has spoken — a 25% tax on all fully built vehicles imported into the US will go into effect today. The trickle down of this is likely to also increase car prices in Canada, unfortunately, but there are still steps you can take to ensure you get a great deal on your next car.

1) Maximize your trade in value…by not actually trading in your car. 🚗 If you have the patience and ability to be without a car during the transition, selling your car privately can often fetch you a higher price tag than trading your car in at the dealership.

2) Keep your eye on the MSRP of the vehicle you have your eye on. Make sure that you’re not paying above list price on your new car on the guise of “tariffs”.

3) Make a list of your must-haves versus your nice-to-haves. You could likely do without all the bells and whistles of the highest trim level in favour of a mid-level trim if it means sticking to your budget.

If you’re feeling stressed about how tariffs may impact your upcoming car purchase, you’re not alone. Here are our tips to navigate the potential uncertainty:

✅ Stick to your financial timeline. You should purchase a new car when you can afford it. If moving up this milestone by a month (or more) will negatively affect your budget or quality of life, it’s not worth the potential “savings”.

✅ Stick to your car budget. If it means bumping down a trim level on your new car or re-adjusting expectations, this will pay off in the long term versus committing to a car you can’t afford.

✅ Don’t stress over what you can’t control or what hasn’t happened yet. That’s just generally good life advice. ☺️

There’s a common belief that buying a car at the end of the month will get you a better deal. We’re here to tell you…that might just be true.

All car salespeople work on commission, and it’s important for their own paycheque and for the dealership to hit monthly targets set out by the dealer principal or even the manufacturer.

The real answer to this question is: the right time to buy a car is when you need to, and when you can best afford to. If you have the time luxury to shop around for deal, however, we do recommend starting the process in the last two weeks of the month to allow time for test drives, negotiation, and signing the deal before the first of the next month. 📆
