Sometimes you have to get a little creative with your planning.

As the crew of Apollo 11—Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins—prepared for their spaceflight, they knew that they had to find some security for their families should the worst happen. NASA’s insurance was out of the question, since it did not originally cover astronauts. So the crew got creative. https://bit.ly/49IG3VH

The solution: the astronauts capitalized on their fame. All three men autographed hundreds of envelopes, each with a special design commemorating the mission and a postage stamp celebrating a previous Apollo mission. These envelopes were to be postmarked on launch day or Moon-landing day, ideally increasing their value as collectibles. If the astronauts didn’t return, their families could sell these “insurance covers,” as they were known, to stay afloat.
