I had the absolute pleasure of attending a traditional pasta-making class at Trattoria Vesso, beautifully arranged by our MGA and Equitable Life Insurance. It was an incredible opportunity for a small group of women in the insurance industry to gather, share stories, and build meaningful new connections.

Chef Vesso was an amazing teacher, ensuring we worked hard for our supper and walked away with some fantastic new skills (and a generous amount of fresh pasta to share with our families!).

Life doesn’t always stay in one place — and the good news is, your life insurance doesn’t have to either. If you own a whole life policy and later decide to live outside of Canada, your coverage will very likely remain fully in force worldwide.

That said, every policy is unique, so it’s always wise to speak with your advisor or the insurance company directly before making the move… just to be safe.

➡️If You Pass Away While Living Abroad
Your beneficiary can still receive the full benefit, and process is straightforward:

1. They contact the insurance company’s claims team
The claims department will guide them step‑by‑step, just as they would if the death occurred in Canada.

2. They provide the required documents
This typically includes:
✔️ A completed claim form
✔️ A death certificate from the country where the death occurred
✔️ Proof of identity
✔️ In some cases, a physician’s statement or additional documentation

3. Translations or authentication may be required
If the death certificate isn’t in English or French, a certified translation may be needed. Some countries also require an apostille or consular stamp to verify authenticity.

4. The insurer reviews the claim
As long as the policy was active and premiums were up to date, the benefit is paid out just as it would be in Canada.

5. The beneficiary receives the funds
They can receive the payout in a Canadian bank account or work with their own bank to arrange an international transfer.
