Overwhelm, fear, and shame don’t belong in your relationship with money. When money is your thing you can take confident action towards your biggest goals.

In honor of International Women’s Day this month, I'll be sharing tips from my book, Make Money your Thing, throughout March.

I wrote this book to empower women by helping them overcome money insecurities and gain control over their finances. Making money your thing is achievable for EVERYONE, and it's not as challenging as it may seem.

Starting with the first tip: believe in yourself. Have faith that you can indeed make money your thing. Women often underestimate themselves in matters of money, numbers, math, and finance. What if we collectively decided to change that narrative starting now?

Let's eliminate phrases like "I’m not good with numbers," "I’m not good at math," and "Money just isn’t my thing." Say no to negative money self-talk. If you hear another woman expressing such thoughts, assure her it's not true. These negative beliefs have no place in our journey.

By letting go of these limiting beliefs, you create space for lighter, more aligned thoughts that pave the way for achieving your significant financial goals.

Remember, you've got this. Together, we've got this!

Just a friendly heads-up that the RRSP contribution deadline for the 2023 tax year is approaching on February 29, marking the onset of "RRSP season." While it's a timely reminder to consider contributions, there's absolutely no pressure – especially given the financial landscape with increasing interest rates and inflation in recent years.

If contributing this year isn't aligning with your financial plan, that's perfectly okay. Looking ahead to 2024, here are some thoughtful strategies to enhance your RRSP approach:

1. Take a closer look at your monthly expenses, identifying potential areas for savings, such as eliminating underused subscription services.

2. Explore avenues to augment income, whether through overtime commitments, a supplementary income source, or engaging in constructive discussions about compensation with your employer.

3. Embrace the consistency of contributions, regardless of the amount. Automating monthly transfers can simplify the process and foster financial discipline.

4. Foster a mindful approach to discretionary spending in 2024. Consider implementing strategies like the 48-hour rule for non-essential purchases, allowing for reflection before finalizing transactions.

Approach this RRSP season with a balanced perspective, acknowledging the varied financial situations we navigate. Extend compassion to yourself, and strategically plan for financial success in 2024. Your commitment to wealth-building deserves recognition and encouragement.

It’s Valentine’s Day - and you know what could use some of your loving?! Your money! Here are ways to show love to your money:

Pay attention to it - stop ignoring your money! Dedicate quality time to your money by tracking expenses, increasing your financial literacy, and planning out your financial goals. You work so hard to earn it, doesn’t that give it the right to rank high on your priority list.

Keep more of it - easier said than done I know. But rather than all your money going out each pay period as soon as it arrives to pay the bills, setup automatic payments towards your savings goals. This is how you pay yourself first!

Help it grow - don’t just let your savings sit on the sidelines as cash, invest it to reap the rewards of compounding growth. Because growth means even more money to love.

Stay engaged - always be involved in conversations and decisions about your money. Do not fully give up control to anyone, it’s your money and nobody will love it as much as you do.

Money is nothing in itself. Instead it’s a tool that makes your biggest goals and experiences a reality. And you deserve to live the life of your dreams. So send some loving to your money this V day!

I had a dream that I bought a car on a whim… no test drive, didn’t even see it until after I paid for it. I was relieved when I woke up realizing I hadn’t just blown $60k on a purchase I didn’t actually want or need. I get that most major purchases aren’t made as impulsively as in my dream (or nightmare lol) but I would argue many discretionary purchases are made without giving much thought. And this can often lead to some buyers remorse.

A common financial goal for the new year I have heard from many is spending less/ being more intentional with where your money goes. Which is a fabulous goal, because less money spent means more available to pay down debt and save for you short and long term goals.

So what are my top tips to reduce your spending in 2024 :

- Take a pause: especially for major purchases, implement a rule where you have to think about it for 24-48 hours. When you allow yourself more time to process you give your rational mind an opportunity to weigh in on the decision.

- Track your spending: for a day, a week, or ideally a full month to get a clear picture of your spending patterns and where your money goes. This awareness exercise is powerful for noticing any behaviours you wish to change.

- Challenge yourself to some “no spend” days: This is a great little spending detox where you don’t spend any money for the entire day. It might entail making your coffee at home and bringing your own lunch to work. Start with one and see if you can incorporate more throughout the month.

- Leave the cards at home: I have a client who is a super saver and I asked her what her secret is. She says she doesn’t bring her debit/credit cards when she goes shopping. Try to make buying stuff a little less convenient by leaving the cards at home or removing credit card details from online shopping sites.

- Write out your financial goals: when you get clear on where you want your money going you can be more disciplined on where you don’t want it going. Write down your big financial goals and keep them close so you can remind yourself what you are working towards when the spending temptations arise.

If you want to prioritize cutting back on spending in the new year try out one of these strategies. Every bit counts and you deserve to feel good about your finances, no spending nightmares for you!

I had the opportunity to talk about how you can make money your thing on The House of Mystery Radio Show on NBC! I prepared with lots of spooky money stories and references - but then when I asked before we got started about how they planned to put a spooky spin on money, the host Alan explained that it has morphed into having all sorts of guests and topics.

But I still made sure to talk about how we can make investing less scary!

Words cannot describe how cool it feels especially as a first time author to get such amazing feedback! My goal wasn’t just to put out a book about money. I wanted to write a book about money that was a fun read that made women feel good about their finances no matter where they were on their journey. I want to change the relationship women have with money. I want women to feel confident in their ability to be financially independent. Because money IS your thing!

My amazing Book Coaching client and incredible financial planner Kalee Boisvert, just received a ⭐️⭐️STARRED review from Kirkus
For her brand new book, and I couldn’t be prouder!

This is an incredibly rare honor, and I am so excited to see what she does for women and their finances next! (link to full review in comments)
