One question we hear often:
“How long will a consumer proposal stay on my credit report?”

The answer can depend on the credit bureau and how the information on your accounts is reported.

For example, TransUnion states that a consumer proposal and the accounts reported as satisfied through it are removed three years after the proposal is satisfied or six years after the account was first defaulted on, whichever comes first.

Credit reporting is one of the factors worth understanding when considering a consumer proposal.

A Licensed Insolvency Trustee can explain how the consumer proposal process works and what it may mean for your financial situation. You can also review your credit reports to see how information is being reported by each credit bureau.

Did you know? A consumer proposal can be paid off early without a prepayment penalty.

If you’re able to make additional payments during your consumer proposal, you may be able to complete it sooner than originally planned.

Paying it off early doesn’t change the amount agreed to under the proposal-it means completing your required payments sooner.

If you’re currently in a consumer proposal and are considering paying it off early, speak with your Licensed Insolvency Trustee about your remaining balance and payment terms.

Have questions about how consumer proposals work? Our team can help you understand the process.

Can payday-loan debt be included in a consumer proposal?
In many cases, payday loans are unsecured debts that can be included along with other eligible unsecured debts in a consumer proposal.

A consumer proposal is a formal process under Canada’s Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. Depending on your financial circumstances, it may allow you to offer creditors repayment of a portion of what you owe, extend the time to repay, or both.

But a consumer proposal isn’t automatically the right option for everyone.

If payday loans or other debts have become difficult to manage, a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can review your financial situation and explain the options that may be available to you.

🍂 Fall is a good time to check in on your finances.

As routines change and year-end approaches, take a moment to look at your financial picture.

-Are your debt payments still manageable?
-Are you relying more on credit for everyday expenses?
-Do you know how much interest you're paying?
-Are there expenses coming up before year-end that you need to prepare for?

Looking at your debt, payments, spending, and upcoming expenses together can give you a clearer picture of where you stand.

If debt has become difficult to manage, a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can review your financial situation and explain the debt-relief options that may be available to you.
