Did You Turn 71 This Year?
Learn the rules behind your RRIF.

If you turned 71 in 2025, you’ll need to collapse your RRSP by December 31 - most often by opening a RRIF (Registered Retirement Income Fund). Converting sooner rather than later ensures everything is processed on time and there are no unexpected surprises.

The good news: you don’t have to withdraw anything in the year you open your RRIF. Mandatory withdrawals begin the following year, and you can even delay them to the end of that year.

Taking time to understand RRIF rules - withdrawal timing, withholding options, and required minimums - can help you manage taxes, maintain benefits, and avoid surprises.

Should You Pay Down Your Mortgage or Invest?

Lately, some of our clients have been weighing this decision: Is it better to pay down your mortgage or invest the extra cash?

Opting to pay down your mortgage means securing a risk-free return equal to your mortgage rate, along with the satisfaction of moving closer to owning your home outright. However, this means your funds are locked up in your property, making them less accessible in times of need.

On the flip side, investing in options like a TFSA or RRSP can potentially yield higher returns than your mortgage rate, while also offering liquidity and diversification. Just remember, investments carry market risks, and you likely won’t experience any relief from mortgage payments.
