"Bringing [the bison] back is an act of restoration for this land and our community." Stella Lavallee, President, Willow Lake Métis Nation (WLMN)

While the rain put a damper on the outdoor festivities, community members and partners still came together to celebrate the launch and official grand opening of Willow Lake Métis Farms.

This exciting initiative includes the recent reintroduction of 20 bison to the area—already grown to 26 with the arrival of six new calves—as well as a hydroponic farm that will provide fresh, locally grown leafy greens.

Thank you Elder Mary for the opening prayer and for helping start the event in a good way. Thank you also Rockin Fiddle for the great music and the youth dancers for the jigging performance. It was inspiring to hear from Stella Lavallee, Matthew Michetti, and Destiny Martin about the vision, dedication, and hard work that have gone into making this project a reality.

AIOC was proud to attend today's event. We are also honoured to have played a supportive role through our loan guarantee program to facilitate Willow Lake's co-ownership in Suncor's Northern Courier project and Enbridge's Athabasca Trunkline.

Congratulations again on this important milestone. We look forward to seeing Willow Lake Métis Nation continue to build on this success and create lasting benefits for future generations.

June marks National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the histories, cultures, resilience, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada.

Long before modern economies, Indigenous Nations demonstrated leadership in trade, governance, stewardship and innovation. These enduring strengths continue to shape communities, businesses and partnerships that are building prosperous futures today.

Throughout this month, AIOC is committed to learning, listening, reflecting, and celebrating Indigenous histories and achievements as we continue to move forward together.

Today, on Moose Hide Campaign Day, people across Canada are wearing moose hide pins as a collective stand against gender-based violence. This small piece of moose hide carries a powerful message of solidarity and a shared commitment to ending violence in all its forms.

At AIOC, we recognize that we all have a role to play. Meaningful change begins with open conversations and everyday actions, particularly among men and boys, to support reconciliation, healing, and respect for women, children, and gender diverse folks.

We also acknowledge the ongoing and disproportionate impacts of gender-based violence on Indigenous women, girls and 2spirit peoples who are more likely to experience violence from a current or former partner. This reality must change.

As part of this commitment, AIOC staff were proud to participate in the Moose Hide Campaign Walk in Calgary for the second year in a row, standing alongside community members in support of ending violence and promoting respect and safety for all.

Together, we can create meaningful and lasting change.

Thank you AIOC team for showing up and walking in solidarity.

“The big stone that Alberta’s dropped in this pond [through AIOC] has had ripple effects across Canada. Then there’s a national program. There are provincial programs in other provinces, so the waves they’re creating started right here in Alberta [we’re] seeing this happen all across Canada.”

The most recent episode of Voices of Our People features Gary Bosgoed, CEO and President of Bosgoed Project Consultants and Vice Chair of AIOC’s Board of Directors. Gary highlights the impacts of AIOC’s loan guarantee model and successes as informing and supporting the establishment of the federal and other provincial programs.

Gary also shares his personal journey growing up on a farm outside Regina, his connection to the Prairies and Indigenous identity, and how his career in consulting engineering and project management led him to work alongside First Nations communities to help build schools, health centres, and community facilities that continue to serve future generations.

Throughout the conversation, Gary speaks to the importance of Indigenous ownership, participation, and leadership in major projects and the transformational impact this work can have for Indigenous Nations and groups across the country.

Voices of Our People is an ongoing series on the Windspeaker Radio Network featuring stories from Indigenous People across Canada. Brought to you by the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (AIOC), proud to back Indigenous Nations and groups in the pursuit of transformative investment partnerships.

Red Dress Day, held on May 5, is a time to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two‑Spirit People (MMIWG2S+), and to acknowledge the deep and lasting impacts this violence has on families, communities, and Nations.

At AIOC, we recognize that remembrance is not symbolic alone. It is a call to responsibility, accountability, and ongoing commitment to justice.
