I was looking at my echinacea plants recently and feeling completely overwhelmed by all the dead blooms. We were heading into fall and I also had a lot on my plate. Honestly, I was tempted to just hack everything down and call it done.
Gardening is therapeutic for me so instead, I started deadheading. One bloom at a time. As I carefully cut away what was finished, I discovered new blooms still underneath, ready to open.
That made me stop and think….isn't that a little like running a business? We get so overwhelmed by everything that needs our attention that sometimes we avoid starting altogether. The entire "garden" feels like too much. But once we start tending to one thing at a time, something changes. Progress creates energy and momentum and we begin to see possibilities again.
Sometimes we're overwhelmed not because we need to become more productive, but because we're still giving energy to things that have already had their season. Tasks, processes, services, meetings, expectations. Even ways of thinking. We keep doing them because we've always done them. Deadheading reminded me that pruning isn't about loss. It's about making room for growth.
So instead of asking:
"How am I going to get everything done?"
Maybe ask:
"What doesn't need to come with me into the next season?"
What's dragging you down in your business right now? What could bloom if you finally gave yourself permission to prune it?
