Just hired your first employee? Here's what to sort out first

Hiring your first employee is a big milestone, and it changes what your bookkeeping needs to look like.

Here's what we'd get in place early:

✅ Payroll software set up and connected properly from the start
✅ Superannuation and leave entitlements tracked accurately
✅ Clear processes for timesheets and pay runs, so nothing falls through the cracks
✅ Reporting that keeps wages visible as part of your overall cash flow

Getting this right from the first pay run saves a lot of cleanup later.

😀 Comment below if you've just taken on your first hire; we'd love to hear how it's going!

The top 3 questions we hear when business owners hire a bookkeeper

✔️ "How much does it actually cost?"
Fixed-fee bookkeeping means no hidden costs or surprise invoices.

✔️ "Will I still understand what's happening in my business?"
You'll actually have clearer reporting than before, not less visibility.

✔️ "What if my books are already behind?"
That's exactly what Catch-Up Bookkeeping is for. We get everything reconciled and up to date again, so you're back on track with no judgement.

If you've been asking yourself any of these, that's usually a good sign it's time for a conversation.

Ever opened Xero and immediately want to close it again?

When it's done right, Xero works quietly in the background instead of feeling like extra admin.

Here's what that actually takes:

✅ A chart of accounts built around how your business really operates, not a generic template
✅ Bank feeds and reconciliation rules set up properly from day one
✅ Reporting that shows you what matters, without digging for it
✅ Integrations that talk to each other instead of creating double handling

3 signs your books need a spring clean before your next BAS!

If any of these sound familiar, it might be time for a clean-up:

❌ You're not sure what's actually been reconciled and what hasn't
❌ Receipts and invoices are scattered across emails, folders, and your inbox
❌ Your reports don't quite match what you know is in the bank

Spring is a good time to get ahead on the next BAS rather than scrambling when it's due.

FAQ – What is a balance sheet?

A balance sheet is a snapshot of your business at a single point in time. It shows what you own, what you owe, and what's left over once the two are weighed against each other.

Think of it this way:

👍 Assets are what the business owns: cash, equipment, money owed to you by customers
👉 Liabilities are what the business owes: loans, credit cards, money owed to suppliers

What's left over once liabilities are taken away from assets is your equity, essentially the business's net worth on paper.

Save this one for the next time your accountant mentions your balance sheet!

What a bookkeeper notices in your numbers that business owners usually miss?

Most business owners look at their numbers and see whether there's money in the account. A bookkeeper looks a little deeper:

✔️ Expenses creeping up in one category without anyone noticing
✔️ Invoices sitting unpaid for longer than they should
✔️ Cash sitting in the account that's already owed to someone else
✔️ Spending patterns that repeat every quarter, whether anyone planned for them or not

None of this shows up if you're only glancing at the bank balance, but can be spotted early when someone is actually looking at the details behind it.
