"Just put it through the business" isn't tax advice.
You've heard it at a barbecue. From a mate. Maybe even from a past adviser.
Family holiday? Put it through the business. Kids' laptop? Business. The weekly shop? Close enough.
It feels like a perk of being the owner.
But the ATO's 2026 focus includes exactly this: private costs claimed as business expenses, and business money used for personal spending.
And their data matching is better than ever.
Right goal. Wrong method.
"But Guru, it's my business. Isn't it my money?"
Once it's in a company or trust, it's not that simple. Taking money out the wrong way can create tax problems of its own.
You wouldn't let a customer take stock off the shelf without an invoice. The ATO sees your business the same way.
There are legitimate ways to pay yourself and claim what's genuinely deductible. They just need a plan.
One owner claims everything and hopes nobody checks.
The other claims what's right and sleeps through audit season.
Both run the costs through the business. Only one keeps the deductions.
