Profitable on paper. Tight in the bank.

It's the conversation I have most often with business owners, and it almost never means the business is in trouble. It means three things have lined up at once:

→ Debtors pay at 30, 60, sometimes 90 days
→ Payroll, rent, stock and the ATO don't wait that long
→ The overdraft is maxed, or was never set up

That's a timing problem with a funding fix. Depending on the business, that's a working capital facility, invoice finance, a secured or unsecured business loan, or simply a properly sized overdraft that should have been in place two years ago.

The worst time to arrange finance is the week you need it. Lenders price urgency, and a rushed application gets the file you'd rather not send. Fifteen minutes now, while nothing is on fire, is usually enough to know what's available and what it would cost you.

Three of the big four banks are now forecasting a rate rise before the end of the year. Most economists still expect a hold. 📈
Nobody knows for certain — the RBA meets again on 29 September. But "wait and see" only works as a strategy if you already know your numbers.
Two things worth doing this weekend:
1️⃣ Find out whether your current rate is still competitive. If rates do move, the gap between a sharp loan and a lazy one gets wider, not narrower.
2️⃣ Know what your repayment looks like if it does go up — so it's a decision you've already made, not a surprise on the direct debit.
