The Longer I Do This, The Less I Believe Finance Is About Money

People often think that after more than thirty years in lending, I spend my days thinking about numbers.

The truth is, I spend far more time thinking about people.

Behind every loan application is someone hoping for something bigger.

A family wanting stability.

A young couple buying their first home.

Parents planning for the future.

Someone wondering whether what they dream of is actually possible.

That's why I've never believed my job was simply arranging finance.

It's about listening, understanding where people want to go and helping them build a plan to get there.

Some of the most rewarding moments don't happen on settlement day.

They happen years later.

When clients tell me their kids have grown up in the home they worked so hard to buy.

When someone who once thought they had no chance is now helping the next generation into the property market.

Those moments remind me that finance isn't really about money.

It's about what becomes possible because of it.

Every now and then, a client sends something that reminds you why you chose this profession.

This arrived this week, and I have permission to share it.

For more than fifteen years this family rented the home they dreamed of owning. After speaking with their bank and other brokers, they believed buying it simply wasn't possible.

Together we explored every available option, built a strategy and made the purchase happen.

The words below mean more to me than any award or sales result because they remind me that our work is ultimately about people, not loans.

My husband and I are in our late 40s/early 50s, with two teenage children. I'm a sole trader, and my husband works FIFO. It had been a very long time since we owned our own home. For the past 15 years we had been renting, facing all the challenges that come with it—the lack of stability, routine inspections, needing permission just to have a pet, never truly being able to make the space our own, and, most of all, paying someone else's mortgage. With rent continuing to rise, saving a deposit of our own felt almost impossible.

When our landlord unexpectedly offered us the opportunity to purchase the home we were renting, it felt like a dream. We had some savings, but we still needed to find a significant amount for the deposit. We spoke with the bank and a couple of other brokers, but the numbers simply weren't stacking up. We were starting to lose hope.

Thankfully, our best man referred us to Alan and the team at Bayside Property & Finance.

The Best Phone Call I Ever Make

There are plenty of phone calls in my job.

Some are straightforward.

Some are difficult.

But there's one I'll never get tired of making.

"Congratulations... your finance has been approved."

It's amazing how often there's a few seconds of silence before the excitement kicks in.

Sometimes there's laughter.

Sometimes there's relief.

Occasionally, there are tears.

Those reactions remind me that buying a home is never just about bricks and mortar.

It's about giving a family a place to call their own.

It's about children growing up with security.

It's about proving to yourself that something you thought was out of reach really is possible.

After more than 30 years, those conversations still make me smile.

Helping everyday Australians achieve something they've worked so hard for is, and always will be, the best part of what I do.

Some people measure success by the number of homes they’ve financed.

I’ve always measured it by the number of lives I’ve had the privilege to be part of.

For more than 30 years, I’ve been fortunate to sit across the table from Australians during some of the biggest moments of their lives.

Buying a first home.

Growing a business.

Investing for the future.

Rebuilding after life’s unexpected setbacks.

Those moments are never just about money.

They’re about dreams, security, family and creating opportunities that can change lives.

People often ask me why I’ve stayed in this profession for so long.

The answer has never been the finance.

It’s the people.

It’s seeing the relief on someone’s face when they realise home ownership is finally within reach.

It’s helping families achieve something they once thought was impossible.

It’s earning something far more valuable than a commission...

Their trust.

Away from work, I’m a husband to Natalie, a proud dad to four incredible kids, President of East Brighton Football Club, and someone who believes strong communities are built by people who choose to show up, contribute and help others.

I’ve always believed success isn’t measured by what we achieve for ourselves.

It’s measured by how many people we help along the way.

This page isn’t just about property and finance.

Everyone deserves someone in their corner.

Over the past 30 years, I've had the privilege of helping thousands of Australians through some of life's biggest financial decisions.

Buying a first home.

Building wealth through property.

Starting or growing a business.

Refinancing when life throws a curveball.

Along the way, I've realised something.

People rarely remember the interest rate.

They rarely remember the paperwork.

What they remember is how you made them feel.

Did someone take the time to listen?

Did someone explain things without the jargon?

Did someone stay beside them when things became difficult?

That's always been the way I've tried to approach my work.

Many of you know me through Bayside Finance & Property.

Others know me through football, cricket or the local community.

Whichever path brought us together, I hope you've come to know me as someone who genuinely enjoys helping people.

Over the coming months, I'd like to share a little more of that journey.

Not just finance.

Not just property.

I'll also be sharing stories about leadership, community, family, lessons I've learnt over the years and hopefully a few things that might help someone else along the way.
