“It’ll all just go to the kids.” 🏡
Six words that can cost a family more than almost any other.
Australia doesn’t tax inheritances. It taxes the things inside them, and each one plays by different rules:
🥚 Dad’s super → paid to adult children, part of it can be taxed at up to 17%.*
📈 Mum’s share portfolio → her capital gain can travel with it, and the bill lands when the kids sell.
🎁 The “let’s sort it now” gift → handing an asset over early can be treated like a sale, tax included.
None of this shows up on the day. It shows up later, in a letter from the ATO.
It’s also some of the most plannable tax there is. A conversation while everyone’s still around the table can do more than years of paperwork afterwards. 🌿

📌 Save this for the next family dinner, and send it to the sibling who “handles the paperwork”.
*Up to 15% plus the Medicare levy on the taxable component of a super death benefit paid to a non-dependant. General information only, current as at the date of posting.
