🏪 Is your home-based business ready to make the move to commercial premises?

It’s an exciting step. What started at the kitchen table, in the spare room or out in the shed has grown enough to need a shop, studio, workshop or office of its own.

But moving your business out of home can also change the risks you need to think about — and the insurance you may need.

You could suddenly have customers visiting your premises, more stock or equipment to protect, signage and fit-outs, employees working alongside you, or additional responsibilities under a commercial lease.

Your existing insurance arrangements may no longer be suitable for the business you’ve become.

That’s why it’s worth reviewing your cover before you open the doors, rather than discovering after something goes wrong that an important risk wasn’t covered.

📞 Talk to Roger at RSM Tasmania Insurance Brokers about the insurance your growing business may need when it makes the move from home to commercial premises.

What happens when an employee is injured at work — and can't simply come back on Monday?

A workplace accident can happen in seconds. But the consequences can continue for weeks or even months.

An injured employee may need medical treatment, physiotherapy and rehabilitation before they're ready to return to their normal duties.

Meanwhile, their job hasn't disappeared.

Someone still has to do the work. Other employees may need to pick up additional duties, a temporary replacement might be needed, and eventually the injured employee may return gradually on suitable duties while they continue to recover.

That's when workers compensation becomes much more than another insurance premium.

In our latest RSM Insights article, we follow the fictional story of Ben, a Hobart worker who injures his shoulder, and look at what happens to both Ben and the business employing him during his recovery.

Because when a worker is injured, there can actually be two recoveries taking place:

The employee has to recover physically.
The business has to keep functioning financially and operationally.

And it raises an important question:
If this happened in your business tomorrow, are you confident your workers compensation arrangements properly reflect your business today?

🔨 Tradie insurance is about much more than protecting your tools.

Your tools and equipment may be essential to earning a living, so naturally they’re one of the first things you think about when it comes to insurance.

But what about everything else that could put your business — and your income — at risk?

An accident on a job site, damage to someone else’s property, stolen equipment, an injured worker or an unexpected event that prevents you from working can all have consequences well beyond the cost of replacing a drill or a toolbox.

Depending on your trade and how your business operates, you may need to consider cover such as Public Liability, Tools and Equipment, Commercial Motor, Workers Compensation and other forms of business insurance.

The important thing is making sure your insurance reflects the work you actually do and the risks you face — rather than simply assuming that protecting the tools protects the business.

🤖 Cyber threats have changed. Has your business protection kept up?

Cyber crime has come a long way from the days of suspicious emails that were relatively easy to spot.

Today, businesses can face ransomware, data theft, compromised accounts, fraudulent payments and increasingly sophisticated attacks designed to catch people and systems off guard.

And as technology continues to develop, cyber criminals are developing their methods too.

Good cyber security remains an important first line of defence — but even well-protected businesses can experience a cyber incident.

That’s where Cyber Insurance can become an important part of your overall business protection.

The right cover can help your business respond to the financial and operational consequences of a cyber event and get back on its feet when something goes wrong.

☕ A café. ⚡ An electrician. 💐 A florist.

They might not have much in common — and when it comes to the risks they face, they can be very different indeed.

That's why business insurance isn't necessarily a case of one size fits all.

In our latest RSM Video Insight, we take a quick look at why the insurance your business needs depends on what you do, where you do it, what you rely on — and what could go wrong.

🔄 Your business changes. Regulations change. Your insurance may need to change too.

Running a business rarely means standing still.

You might take on employees, buy new equipment, move premises, introduce new services or simply find that the risks facing your industry have changed.

At the same time, regulations, insurance policies and the cover available to businesses can change as well.

That’s why business insurance shouldn’t necessarily be something you arrange once and then forget about.

An experienced insurance broker can help you review your cover, understand changes that may affect your business and identify areas where your existing insurance may no longer reflect the way you operate today.

And because every industry is different, what matters to one Tasmanian business may be completely different from what matters to another.

📞 Talk to Roger at RSM Tasmania Insurance Brokers and make sure your business insurance keeps pace with your business.

💰 The cheapest insurance policy isn’t necessarily the cheapest option in the long run.

When you’re running a business, keeping costs under control matters. So it’s perfectly reasonable to compare insurance premiums and look for a competitive price.

But price is only part of the equation.

A cheaper policy may have different limits, exclusions, excesses or levels of cover — and those differences can become very important when it’s time to make a claim.

The better question isn’t simply, “Which policy costs less?”

It’s “Which policy gives my business the protection it actually needs?”

That’s one of the advantages of talking to an insurance broker. A broker can help you compare more than the premium and understand what you’re actually getting for your money.

Because saving a few dollars on insurance today isn't much of a saving if you discover later that the cover you needed wasn't there.

📞 Talk to Roger at RSM Tasmania Insurance Brokers about finding insurance that suits your business, rather than simply choosing on price.

Should Your Business Insurance Cover Social Media Risks? 📱

Social media is now part of everyday business — but what happens if your account is hacked, your business is impersonated, confidential information is accidentally shared, or something posted online leads to a claim?

The important question isn't whether you need "social media insurance".

It's whether the insurance you already have appropriately reflects the risks created by the way your business operates online.

Our latest RSM Insights article looks at some of the risks businesses can face through social media, where different types of insurance may potentially come into the picture, and why it's worth discussing your online activities with your insurance broker.

💻 A cyber attack doesn’t have to destroy your business to cost you money.

Sometimes, simply stopping you from doing business for a few days can be expensive enough.

If a cyber incident locks you out of your systems, disrupts online bookings, prevents staff accessing essential data or brings normal operations to a halt, there can be more at stake than the immediate cost of fixing the problem.

There’s also the income you may lose while your business gets back on its feet.

That’s why, when discussing Cyber Insurance, it’s worth talking to your insurance broker about Business Interruption as well.

The right protection isn’t just about dealing with the cyber incident itself. It’s about understanding how your business would cope financially if that incident temporarily stopped you trading.

Every business is different, so the cover you need should reflect how your business actually operates.

📞 Talk to Roger at RSM Tasmania Insurance Brokers about protecting your business against cyber risks — and what happens if those risks interrupt business as usual.
