The 50/30/20 (ish) rule 💸

A simple budgeting guide to help you manage your money without overcomplicating it!

💰50% on needs– rent or mortgage repayments, groceries, bills and insurance.

💰30% on wants– eating out, shopping, holidays and subscriptions.

💰20% on savings & debt– building your savings, investing or paying down debt.

This rule won’t work for everyone, and that’s okay! Your income, living expenses and financial commitments all play a role in what you can realistically allocate to each category.

If 50/30/20 fits your lifestyle and financial situation, it’s a great place to start. If it doesn’t, adjust the percentages to suit you. Your budget should work for your life, not the other way around. 🙌

The goal isn’t to follow a perfect formula. It’s to understand where your money is going and make it work for you.

🏠 Your home loan is more than an interest rate.

When reviewing your loan, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture.

Consider the rate, fees, features, flexibility and whether the loan still suits your current circumstances.

A lower rate isn’t automatically the best option if the overall loan doesn’t meet your needs.

Review the whole picture.

If you’re wondering whether your current home loan is still right for you, Own Money can help you understand your options.

💰 OFFSET OR REDRAW?

You’ll often hear these two terms when talking about home loans.

While both can potentially help reduce the interest you pay, they work differently.

The right option depends on your loan, lender, financial circumstances and how you manage your money.

Before choosing a loan feature, make sure you understand how it actually works.

🏠Thinking about investing in property?

It’s easy to get caught up in the property itself.

The location.

The potential rental income.

The renovation opportunities.

But before making a decision, it’s important to understand your borrowing position, how the property fits into your broader financial strategy, and the numbers.

The right property isn’t necessarily the right investment for everyone.

Do your homework first.

🏠 MONEY MYTH MONDAY

“I need a 20% deposit before I can buy a home.”

Not necessarily.

While a larger deposit can have advantages, there are lending options and government schemes that may allow eligible buyers to purchase with a smaller deposit.

Your options will depend on your individual circumstances, eligibility and lender requirements.

The important thing?

Don’t assume. Get informed.

Thinking about buying your first home?

Start by understanding your options.
