FOSTERING EXCELLENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION: THE 7TH SAQAN CONFERENCE

The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) hosted the 7th Southern African Quality Assurance Network (SAQAN) Conference at the Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre, Harare, from 23 to 25 September 2026, under the theme "Fostering Excellence in Higher Education through Effective Internal and External Quality Assurance Systems: Best Practices, Critical Success Factors, Challenges and Opportunities in the SADC Region."

Day One opened with welcome remarks from the ZIMCHE Chief Executive Officer Professor K. P. Dzvimbo, followed by remarks from the ZIMCHE Council Chairperson Professor M. Rukuni on the conference's significance to quality assurance across the SADC region. The keynote address of the Honourable Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Ambassador Dr F. Shava, was delivered on his behalf by Professor F. Tagwira, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry. The conference was then formally declared open by Dr Sylvia Demas, President of the Southern African Quality Assurance Network, whose remarks reflected on regional collaboration, the SAQAN Journal, and capacity development for quality assurance practitioners across the region.

Day Two moved into technical sessions, bringing together quality assurance professionals, policymakers and university leaders from across Southern Africa and beyond to engage on best practice, digital transformation and data-driven approaches to quality assurance in higher education.
