Was Zimbabwe’s ESAP of the 1990s a missed opportunity?

🎙️​Tinashe: "For whatever reason, we thought we were the only country under ESAP. We were not."

📈 ​The real failure of ESAP wasn't undergoing reform - it was failing to stay the course.

"The missed opportunity is that we didn't stay the course. If Zimbabwe had stayed the course, we would have been a fundamentally different economy. But we didn't."

India committed to 10 years of structural reforms following its 1991 financial crisis to transform its economy.

"India was bankrupt... and they were under a structural adjustment program. And they stayed the course. And you know what staying the course meant? 10 years. India changed in that decade."

Tinashe: "The Feruka-Beira pipeline that was actually built by Tiny Rowland in the 50s, 60s. He actually raised private capital, and he's actually a victim of UDI, because when UDI happened, it was nationalized by Ian Smith."

"If that pipeline had remained in private hands, then the private hands should have protected it because they knew the necessity. But a socialist government is not going to understand the necessity. And that is why up to now, we still have just one pipeline, and for the longest, it wasn't even operating..."
