Profile of Hon Eng Dr Matthews Chinombo Mtumbuka

Hon Eng Dr Matthews Chinombo Mtumbuka is a renowned international motivational speaker, businessman and politician. In 2023, he retired from employed career after an illustrious 17 years of work in Scotland, Rwanda, Kenya and Malawi rising to Managing Director/CEO of two international companies UbuntuNet Alliance and Helios Towers Malawi. Prior to that he worked for Airtel for 8 years and Shell UK Ltd in Scotland among other companies.

Dr Mtumbuka is Member of Parliament MP for Rumphi Central Constituency in Malawi since the 17 March 2026.

During his cooperate career, Dr Mtumbuka served on many boards of top companies in Malawi including NBS Bank for 10 years, NICO Pension Services, Mzuzu University, Catholic University, and Chaired Boards for NICO Technologies Ltd, Malawi University of Science and Technology MUST and the Malawi Scotland Partnership MaSP among others. He also served as the youngest ever President (aged 33) for Malawi Engineering Institution from 2011 to 2013.

As a businessman Dr Mtumbuka runs a significant operation in trading and services sectors, employing 85 staff (mostly youth) in 10 operating units.

Academically, Dr Mtumbuka holds a PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar which he obtained in 2005, aged 27. Prior to that he graduated from the now renamed MUBAS University, Malawi with a BSc in Engineering with Distinction. Dr Mtumbuka has 10 refereed publications.

Dr Mtumbuka’s hobbies include public speaking and playing the game of squash. He was champion of public speaking in Malawi in 2010, 2012 and 2020 and was ranked 3rd best Impromptu Speaker in UK and Ireland in 2007.

Today we celebrate Africa Day – 63 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, and our shared commitment to unity, self-determination, and progress.

At PROBAZ, we see Africa’s future in the hands of its professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators. Zimbabwe and the continent are rich in talent, resources, and resilience. Our challenge and opportunity is to turn that potential into enterprises, jobs, and solutions that keep value circulating within Africa.

This year’s theme reminds us that “Africa’s growth is built by Africans.” Whether in finance, law, engineering, health, tech, or agriculture, professionals have a duty to lead with integrity, invest in skills transfer, and create partnerships that break down borders rather than reinforce them.
