The Sustainable Mining Development Trust Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited (SMD TRUST SACCO) was formed by members of the Sustainable Mining Development Trust (SMD-Trust) in August 2015. It was formed after realizing that the conventional financial system is not solving critical financing needs for small scale miners (ASMs) and small medium enterprises (SME's). Most banks and micro fi

nance institutions are not funding small scale mines and SME's considering them as high risk projects leaving them with no financial support for equipment and working capital finance. SMD-Trust SACCO understands the business of artisanal ,small scale miners and SME's better. Mining is a technical and dynamic industry and provision of loans to small mines needs a specialized financial institution which displays a robust combination of technical, financial skill and experience in the mining sector and that is socially and economically involved. This makes the SMD-Trust SACCO a perfect fit. We intend to improve the general standard of living of our members and help them create wealth and employment through this initiative. SMD-Trust SACCO is designed to foster economic growth and sustainable development as well as financial inclusion of the arguably marginalised small scale mining sector. We believe that the activities of this SACCO will be very significant in areas of poverty eradication, financial inclusion, employment creation, technology transfer and formalization of small businesses.
