In response to the challenges faced by Zimbabweans returning from South Africa, the Zimbabwean authorities introduced relaxed border procedures to facilitate the clearance of personal belongings, including vehicles.
However, when it comes to vehicles, returnees are still required to comply with the provisions of Statutory Instrument 10 of 2022. In summary, the regulations require an individual to have been outside Zimbabwe for at least two years and to have owned the vehicle for a minimum of six months before importing it under the returning resident provisions.
As a result, some potential returnees who had purchased their vehicles less than six months before returning were unable to qualify for the concession.
Personal effects, such as household furniture, are generally covered under the returning resident provisions and may be imported duty-free, subject to the applicable requirements.
