Zambia became the first African nation to formally accept the Chinese Yuan (Renminbi) for payment of mining taxes and royalties. This is a major milestone in Zambia's economic relationship with the People's Republic of China.

Here is an explanation of why this happened and what it means for the country:

1. The Practical Reason: Trade Realities

China is the world’s largest consumer of copper, and we are a major copper producer.

Direct Settlement: Many Chinese mining firms operating in Zambia receive their payments for copper exports directly in yuan.

Removing the Middleman: Previously, these companies had to convert their yuan into U.S. Dollars to pay GRZ, who would then often convert those dollars into other currencies or use them for imports. By accepting yuan directly, the Bank of Zambia removes the cost and risk associated with fluctuating exchange rates between the yuan, dollar, and kwacha.

2. Debt Management and Cost Savings

Zambia has significant bilateral debt with China.

Direct Servicing: By collecting tax revenue in yuan, the Zambian government can build up yuan reserves. We can then use these reserves to pay back Chinese loans directly without having to buy U.S. Dollars first.

This reduces "transactional friction," the fees and losses that happen every time a currency is swapped.

3. Reserve Diversification

The Bank of Zambia has been working to diversify its foreign exchange reserves. While the U.S. Dollar remains the primary global reserve currency, holding yuan allows Zambia to:

Align its "wallet" with its biggest trading partner.

Protect itself slightly more from shocks in the U.S. economy or changes in U.S. monetary policy.

4. Strategic Infrastructure

To make this possible, the Bank of Zambia and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) had to update their systems. In December 2025, the central bank began publishing official Renminbi-Kwacha exchange rates to provide the transparency needed for businesses to calculate their tax bills accurately in the new currency.

Police in Eastern Province have launched investigations into the murder of a 22-year-old motorbike rider whose body was discovered in a bushy area near Feni in Chipata District.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that the incident was reported on Monday, December 29, 2025. The victim has been identified as Misao Banda of Nabvutika Compound.

According to police, the matter was reported by the deceased’s elder brother, Patrick Mwanza, aged 33, who stated that his young brother was murdered by unknown persons. Brief facts indicate that on Sunday, December 28, 2025, around 16:00 hours, Misao Banda was operating as a motorbike rider at Chris Corner when two unknown male customers hired him to take them to the Feni area. Before leaving, the deceased informed his friend, Findani Phiri, that he was going to drop off customers in Feni.

On the morning of December 29, 2025, around 08:00 hours, members of the Katambo community spotted a male body lying in a nearby bush. They alerted Mwami Border Police Station via phone. Police officers quickly responded and found the body, which was later identified by the deceased’s elder brother and father, Thomas Banda.

A physical inspection revealed that the deceased had sustained multiple deep cuts to the head, suggesting that a sharp instrument was used in the attack. Police also reported that the victim’s black Gatoma motorbike, bearing registration number ARC 2138 and belonging to a woman identified as Gloria (other details unknown), was stolen during the incident.

The body has since been deposited at Chipata Central Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

No arrests have been made so far, and police have instituted investigations to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the murder.
