Government increases subsidies for chiefs countrywide
GOVERNMENT has increased subsidies for chiefs across the country.
The four Paramount Chiefs in the country will now be getting K18,000, up from K13,000.
Senior chiefs will be getting K16,500 up from K11,500 while ordinary chiefs will now be getting K15,000 up from K10,000.
Chiefs’ retainers commonly known as Kapasos have also not been left out with their wages increased from K2,500 to K5,500.
Senior Chief Mwamba may no longer complain as in an interview with Kalemba last year where he lamented that senior chiefs like him were only receiving a small K11,500 which was too little to sustain lives.
He said the amount was not sufficient to meet the demands of running a chiefdom as they are expected to support their subjects during funerals and other social obligations.
The traditional leader further complained that chiefs were no longer accorded the respect they once enjoyed despite the important role they play in their communities.
In response to these concerns, President Hakainde Hichilema last year, during the Kulamba Traditional Ceremony of the Chewa people in Katete District promised that chiefs would receive an increment in 2026.
True to his word, government has now implemented the upward adjustment, effective January 2026.
According to a letter from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development signed by permanent secretary for Administration Dr Gabriel Pollen, the revised subsidies have already been effected.
The letter further stated that outstanding arrears for January and February 2026 were paid together with the March subsidies and wages.
"In view of the above, you are required to inform all Royal Highnesses and retainers under your jurisdiction," Dr Pollen told provincial permanent secretaries.
