The insurance industry recorded continued growth in the first quarter of 2026, with Gross Written Premium (GWP) increasing by 1.21% compared to Q1 2025. Total industry assets also grew by 3.55%, reflecting continued expansion and resilience in the sector.

The Pensions Industry Report for the 1st Quarter of 2026 highlights continued growth in membership and net assets, reflecting increased participation and confidence in the pensions industry. Despite declines in investment income and returns, the sector recorded growth in net assets and continued to demonstrate resilience.

The Registrar/CEO of the Pensions and Insurance Authority, Mrs. Namakau Mundia Ntini, on Friday, 7 August, hosted a CEO Engagement Breakfast with leaders from insurance industry.

The engagement provided a strategic platform to update industry leaders on key developments in the insurance industry and to strengthen collaboration between the Authority and regulated entities.

A key message from the engagement was the need for the industry to embrace innovation, strengthen underwriting discipline, enhance customer experience, and respond proactively to emerging risks such as climate change, cyber threats, and the evolving impact of artificial intelligence.

Discussions also focused on increasing insurance pe*******on, expanding access to insurance services among underserved populations, and strengthening the resilience of the insurance industry to support Zambia’s broader economic transformation.

Also in attendance were Dr. Brian Manchishi, Deputy Registrar – Insurance at the Pensions and Insurance Authority; Dr. Webster Twaambo, President of the Insurance Association of Zambia (IAZ); and Mrs. Phedeliah Mwaba, President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Zambia (IBAZ).

Stakeholder engagement remains central to the Authority’s mandate of promoting a sound, inclusive, and resilient insurance industry.

The Zambia College of Pensions and Insurance Trust, in partnership with the Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) and the Zambia Association of Pension Funds (ZAPF), invites pension trustees and industry professionals to the Certificate of Competence for Trustees of Pension Schemes.

This intensive five-day programme is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to effectively govern and oversee pension schemes.

The 2026 Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show once again demonstrated the growing impact of the Pensions and Insurance Authority’s Insurance Ambassadors Programme.

Thirty (30) trained Insurance Ambassadors from the University of Lusaka (UNILUS), the University of Zambia (UNZA), and Mulungushi University worked alongside the Authority during the Show, engaging more than 600 members of the public through one-on-one interactions and the distribution of educational materials on insurance and pensions.

The Insurance Ambassadors Programme remains one of the Authority’s most impactful financial literacy initiatives. By equipping university students with practical knowledge of insurance, the programme empowers young people to become trusted advocates for financial literacy within their communities while strengthening public understanding of the value of insurance as a risk mitigating tool.

Beyond raising awareness, the programme continues to develop the next generation of industry professionals. Many former Insurance Ambassadors have gone on to start their careers in pensions and insurance sector, demonstrating the programme’s role as a valuable bridge between academia and industry.

The Authority is proud of the continued partnerships with higher learning institutions that make this initiative possible.
