Yesterday, we turned the tables at our Mentors' Den – Reverse Mentoring Edition, welcoming over 85 students from The University of Zambia, University of Lusaka and Cavendish University for a morning of meaningful conversations, shared learning and career inspiration.

Students took centre stage, sharing bold ideas, fresh perspectives and authentic experiences, while Standard Chartered colleagues listened, reflected and learned alongside them showcasing the true power of reverse mentoring.

Our CEO, Sonny Zulu, shared valuable insights on career growth, the future of work, digital transformation and the skills young people need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Building Smarter Schools Through African Innovation

For Chifula Nambela, transforming education began with a simple observation. Too many schools were still relying on manual systems that consumed valuable time, slowed decision-making and limited opportunities for both educators and learners.

That conviction grew even stronger after participating in the Huawei Seeds for the Future Programme in 2023 and the Digital Tour in China in 2024. Seeing firsthand how technology was reshaping education around the world inspired Chifula and her co-founder to ensure African schools would not be left behind in the digital revolution.

Together, they founded Techroots IT Solutions Zambia Limited, an education technology company helping schools, colleges and universities embrace digital transformation through affordable, AI-powered solutions.

At the heart of the company is Eduroot, a cloud-based Education Management System that enables institutions to manage admissions, academics, finance, communication and reporting from one secure platform. By bringing administration and learning together in a single digital ecosystem, Eduroot helps institutions reduce administrative workloads, improve communication and make better, data-driven decisions.

More than a school management system, Techroots is building technology that empowers institutions to focus on what matters most: delivering quality education. With plans to launch Eduroot LMS and an AI Suite, the company is creating tools that support smarter teaching, personalised learning and more inclusive education across Africa.

Since launching Eduroot, Techroots has successfully piloted the platform with educational institutions in Zambia while earning recognition as one of the Top 10 finalists in the Women in Tech Zambia Accelerator Cohort 6. The company has also been selected to participate in the Seaside Startup Summit 2026 in Armenia, further validating its vision of transforming education through locally built technology.

Looking ahead, Chifula envisions Techroots becoming one of Africa's leading education technology companies. By expanding Eduroot to hundreds of institutions across Zambia and neighbouring countries, the company aims to equip schools with the digital tools they need to improve learning outcomes and prepare students for a technology-driven future.

Chikombo Chilufya
Expanding Financial Opportunities for Zambia's Informal Entrepreneurs

For Chikombo Chilufya, entrepreneurship is about more than access to finance. It's about unlocking opportunity for people who have long been overlooked.

After years of working alongside women and youth entrepreneurs, Chikombo witnessed a common challenge. Despite their determination and hard work, many market traders struggled to access formal financial services because they lacked collateral, credit histories or formal business records. Left with few options, many turned to expensive informal lenders that made it even harder to grow their businesses.

Determined to change that reality, she co-founded Likumi Financial Services, a technology-enabled microfinance startup providing affordable working capital loans and financial education to women and youth market traders across Zambia.

Through a digital loan management platform built on Odoo ERP, Likumi simplifies customer onboarding, loan processing, repayment tracking and portfolio management. The company is also integrating Mobile Money and other digital tools to make financial services faster, more accessible and better suited to the needs of informal entrepreneurs.

Beyond providing finance, Likumi equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge and confidence to build resilient businesses. By combining technology, community-based service delivery and financial literacy, the company is helping customers strengthen their businesses, support their families and contribute to local economic growth.

Since launching, Likumi has already demonstrated the potential of inclusive finance. The company has served more than 140 active customers, disbursed 286 loans, and proven that informal entrepreneurs thrive when given fair access to affordable financial services. At the same time, it has built a fully operational digital lending platform designed to support future growth.

Looking ahead, Chikombo envisions Likumi becoming one of Zambia's leading technology-enabled financial inclusion platforms. By expanding into new markets, strengthening its digital lending technology and introducing intelligent credit assessment, the company aims to help thousands more women and young entrepreneurs grow sustainable businesses and improve their livelihoods.

Being selected among the Top 10 founders in the Women in Tech Zambia Accelerator Cohort 6 marks another important milestone for Chikombo and Likumi. Through the accelerator, she hopes to strengthen the company's investment readiness, build strategic partnerships and position Likumi for its next stage of growth and impact.

Building Trust Into Every Act of Giving

Sometimes, the biggest ideas begin with the simplest moments.

During the 2020 lockdown, Samukhele Mwase was approached by a homeless man asking for money. But instead of cash, the man quietly asked for a loaf of bread. When Samukhele bought it for him, the man's overwhelming gratitude sparked a powerful realisation. People often want to help, but they also want confidence that their support reaches those who need it most.

That moment became the inspiration behind Cowrie Technology Solutions Ltd, a startup using technology to bring greater transparency and accountability to community funding.

Cowrie addresses a challenge faced by companies, philanthropists and development partners: once funds are disbursed, it can be difficult to verify how they are used and whether they achieve their intended impact. Through a secure digital escrow platform, Cowrie links funding to verified project milestones, ensuring resources are released only as agreed and providing real-time visibility into project implementation.

By combining digital escrow, field verification and automated reporting, the platform helps corporate sponsors strengthen their ESG and CSR programmes, gives individual donors greater confidence in their contributions and enables local implementers to demonstrate credibility through transparent project delivery. Most importantly, it helps ensure that communities receive the support intended for them.

One of Cowrie's greatest milestones has been assembling a dedicated team that shares the company's vision. After years of refining the idea and building the right mix of technical and business expertise, the team is now focused on transforming how community projects are funded and verified across Zambia.

Looking ahead, Samukhele envisions Cowrie becoming the trusted digital infrastructure connecting capital with impact. By expanding its milestone-based funding platform, the company aims to help organisations channel resources more transparently into community development, environmental conservation and social impact initiatives across Zambia and, in time, the wider African continent.
