THE GREATEST INVESTOR IS GONE: The End of an Era and the Money Lessons Entrepreneurs Must Learn

On December 31, 2025, an era officially ended. Warren Buffett, the "Oracle of Omaha" and the greatest investor who ever lived, stepped down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the age of 95.

He turned a struggling textile mill into a $1 trillion empire and built a personal fortune of $150 billion. But he didn’t do it through "get rich quick" schemes or gambling. He did it through principles that any young Zambian can apply on the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) today.

Here are the key takeaways from his 60 year career that you need to know before you download that LuSE App:

You Don't Need Millions to Start. You Just Need to Start

Buffett didn’t start as a billionaire. He bought his first stock at age 11 for just K2,300 (about $114.75 money he saved since he was 6).

The Lesson: Stop waiting for a "big deal" to start investing. Whether you have K500 or K5,000, the most important step is buying your first share.

The Power of "Long-Term" is Real

Since 1964, Buffett’s company shares rose by 5,500,000%. Compare that to the S&P 500 (the general market), which rose "only" 39,000%.

The Lesson: Wealth is built by holding, not trading. Buffett calls his strategy a "Rip Van Winkle slumber" he buys great stocks and sits on them for decades. If you buy shares on LuSE this year, think about what they will be worth in 2035, not next month.

Invest in What You Understand

Buffett avoided tech stocks for years because he didn’t understand them. Instead, he bought what he knew: Coca-Cola (because he drank it), Geico (Insurance), and Railroads. When he finally understood tech, he went big on Apple.

The Lesson: Look at the Zambian economy. Which banks do you use? Which breweries make the beer people drink? Which farms feed the nation? Invest in businesses with models you can explain to a 10 year old or a grade 5.

Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful

During the 2008 financial crisis, when everyone was panicking and selling, Buffett stepped in and lent money to companies like Goldman Sachs and General Electric. He made billions from those deals.

The Lesson: Economic challenges (like ZESCO load shedding or currency fluctuation) often scare away casual investors, driving share prices down. For the "Rich Mindset," this is a discount sale. This is when you buy!

Wealth is a Tool, Not the Goal

Despite being a billionaire, Buffett still lives in the same house he bought in the 1950s for $30,000. He has pledged to give away 99% of his wealth to charity.

The Lesson: The goal of the Rich Mindset isn't just to hoard money; it's to build freedom and impact.

Warren Buffett has passed the baton to his successor, Greg Abel. He proved that patience, discipline, and buying good companies works.

It’s Now Your Turn: You have the opportunity to build your own portfolio right here in Zambia. Download the LuSE App and let's begin your journey to long term wealth. Get details in the comments section below.

Find something to sell... Anything legal.

Go into Chinese shops, look around until you find something interesting... Buy it and resale it on Marketplace, Tiktok or Instagram.. Trust me someone will buy it.

Learn how to do something... Anything legal, and start selling your services.

If you don't know what that is, just go to AI and search "Give me Twenty Five Ideas of Personal Services I can sell on Zambia." It will give you ideas.. Pick one or two..

Shop being too 'ndwilistic'. No one is coming to serve you..

You have hoped enough that things will change. Have they changed? You see. Now get on the ground and start selling something.

If it doesn't succeed, you will learn, and try better in the next round.

A little sleep, a little slumber, poverty will overtake you

If you cannot afford an irrigation system and buying feed for Broilers and layers try livestock Farming;

Free range chicken can be kept without buying any feed as in how they do in villages.
Goat Farming can be practiced without money again all you need is just pasture.

Be wise and be ready to do something

Business idea
If you have a 20 pin, buy a deep freezer and some cooler boxes. Buy fish from Kafue or Siavonga. Pack it in transparent plastics and start selling them from home.
When you grow abut a bit, open a fish shop and advertise widely on social media. Within three years, you would have opened more than one shop across Lusaka.

If you are in other locations, find a nearby source.

To add value, you can clean the fish for your clients and sell the fish at a higher price because you would have added more value to your product.

Also provide fish cleaning services at your premises and engage a delivery person to deliver for busy clients.

Create a page for interaction with potential clients. Let people think of you when they think about fish.

You can also give the fish on credit to credible clients.

Expand into dry fish and Kapentas. Include exotic fish like salmon as you expand.

If you don’t have a k20,000 partner with a trusted friend. Make sure you tell each other that the first three years will be for business expansion and not eating from the business.

Remember, wealth creation is about learning business skills.

WANT TO START A BUSINESS IN ZAMBIA? HERE’S HOW TO GO FROM IDEA TO REALITY!

Are you sitting on a brilliant business idea but don’t know where to start? 🤔💡 Don’t worry—many successful entrepreneurs once stood exactly where you are. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to take your dream from idea development to official business registration in Zambia:

1️⃣ Develop Your Business Idea
Start with a problem you can solve. Think about your passions, your community’s needs, and your skills. Validate your idea by asking potential customers if they'd pay for your product or service.

2️⃣ Do Your Research
Understand your industry, competitors, and target market. This will guide your pricing, marketing, and product development strategies.

3️⃣ Write a Business Plan
Map out your goals, strategies, finances, and operations. This document will help you stay focused and attract investors or partners.

4️⃣ Choose a Business Name and Structure
Select a unique name and decide if you’ll register as a sole trader, limited company, cooperative, or partnership.

5️⃣ Register Your Business
👉 Visit PACRA (Patents and Companies Registration Agency) or do it online.
👉 Register for a TPIN with ZRA for tax purposes.
👉 Apply for any required licenses depending on your sector (e.g. Health, Tourism, Mining, Financial Services).

6️⃣ Open a Business Bank Account
Keep your finances organized. A business account is also a requirement for formal tenders and accessing funding.

7️⃣ Secure Startup Capital
Explore funding options like CEEC, CDF, Bank loans, NGO grants, ZDA, or pitch to investors. Start small if you must—just start!

8️⃣ Set Up Your Operations
Get your location, team, equipment, and suppliers in place. Use free digital tools for bookkeeping, marketing, and customer service.

9️⃣ Promote Your Business
Use social media, fliers, and word-of-mouth. Build a brand that customers can trust.

🔟 Stay Compliant
Submit your tax returns, renew licenses, and maintain good business records. Consider joining a business association or chamber of commerce.

💥 Remember: Every big business you see today started with someone who dared to believe in an idea!

Buy a professional camera 📸 and start offering mobile photography services for customers around the malls.

At the moment few if any are offering such services except studio photographers stationed at the malls.

Unlike them, you will be moving around the mall looking for customers who want to take professional photos within the mall.

On average 1000 people visit a mall every day and you might get yourself 50 to 100 people who need your service.

First you need to approach the mall management for your proposal.

SIX ZAMBIAN BUSINESSES YOU CAN DO ONLINE WITHOUT CAPITAL (LEGIT)

Here are some businesses I can think of that you can do in Zambia online with no capital. The beauty about this list is there are no educational requirements. You can be a security guard and still do them if you are willing to learn and you don’t need any licenses to operate. I love the internet because the government finds it difficult to find what license you need to operate and it does not have the capacity to follow you around or monitor you on the internet. I would like you to comment some of them that you know that cost no money to start , no qualifications and has decent income .

1. CV REDESIGNS , COVER LETTERS

Unemployment will never finish in Zambia and the people that have jobs are the ones that look even harder . They need you to help them draft cover letters and CVs. The business can give you as much as K16,000 per month after taxes within 3 years . You have seen my income statements. This business just requires you to put immaturity and manner of excuses to the side and just work and work. You really have to like reading and must have or willing to possess a wealth of knowledge to share. You can do it ! , there is enough for all who decide to do it , just don’t ask me how , if you want to ask , coaching you will be K5000 which is a worthwhile investment. I will mentor you
REQUIREMENTS: Laptop(Yours or Borrowed) , Computer literacy , Hard Worker and you don’t have to be an HR person , I am an accountant by the way .

2. SUBMITTING ZRA TAX RETURNS

You can help small business owners submit their monthly statutory returns such as NAPSA , PAYE , TURNOVER TAX etc . If you don’t pay tax the government will take your k**a business , Business Owners know this . They need you to help them comply because they cant afford a full time accountant . To take that burden Away you can charge them K300 per month for all services . Nomba boi if you have about 20 clients that is K6000 . I know you are comparing with my business that 6 pin yachepa but my business is 3 years old , If you did this business for 3 years , you would only need 53 clients a month to make K16000 (16000/300 per job). 53 Clients in 3 years is a job of acquiring 17 clients per year , that is a job of just convincing one person to be your client per month . If you cant do that ! you have no business , doing business . Am confident you can get so many more clients than 53 , Infact you can even charge more as you go , say K500 and you would only need 32 clients to get to K16000 . Infact aim higher than 16 pin . Go to internet cafes and just pay those guys that submit taxes for people a K100 , They will teach you how to submit taxes and you can learn as you go

REQUIREMENTS : LAPTOP (Yours or Borrowed) , Love for Maths , You don’t need to be an accountant to do it

3. AFFILIATE MARKETING ON FB AND INSTAGRAM

Affiliate marketing is helping people sale their products on FB then getting a commission. Most Zambians are still taking the traditional approach to business and are not familiar with online marketing. You can help them reach people and sale products for a commission. You can mix this strategy with adding a higher margin. Most people in offices don’t know how much things really cost , They are used with high prices they see at Manda hill so when they see a cheaper alternative , they will jump out of their sit and buy from you . This is so far the quickest and easiest. I remember with this business I used to make as much as K400 to K700 profit on one sale of a phone PER day. Some days I wouldn’t make any but some days you can even sale two . So say you make K400 per day that is K12000 in commissions (400 x 30 days). I know someone is saying people don’t buy phones everyday. We need to take them back to baby class for business. People buy phones everyday. Selling phones is far much easier than selling CVs I testify. If you sold a phone a day in a year, you would have not even supplied to 0.001% of Zambia’s population (365 phones / 18 million people x 100%) . And some people even have as much as 3 phones for themselves . A house has 5 phones on average. Don’t think in lack my brother or sister this world is abundant.
More ideas that fall into this category ( Real Estates Agent and Motor Vehicle Sales Agent )

4. ASSIGNMENT WRITING

Help busy and intellectually challenged people to do their assignments . People like to bite off more than they can chew and will enroll into a masters they don’t have a prayer for . Some are able to do the work but have no time because of their hectic business schedule .
Assignments will make up 30% of their final results . They need you to help them secure that 30% . The person has paid K20,000 for his masters program . He will definitely pay you K1000 to K1500 to do his assignments . 5 clients in a month is K5000 . (5 X 1000) . 10 Clients is K10,000 ! . Some assignments are also short and you can charge K300 etc . You will be busy all the time . This business requires you to be hardworking and dedicated . Many people ask me to do their assignments but I don’t do it because what will I say if they ask me about the ethics of doing someones assignment on a radio show or on television ? . For you , its okay , for me am a little on the public side and have to avoid tuma debates but you can do it and you didn’t get it from me !

5. SOCIAL MEDIA BLOGGER AND VLOGGER

You can open an instagram , FB or youtube channel and just post interesting things about your life . If your hobbies and interests draw peoples attention , you can make money . People get confused on what I do , Am I a CV redesigner or a blogger ? I am a blogger , I use my writing to draw audiences then sale CVs . I am not always talking about CVs , am I ? Is this post about CVs or business ? . Blogging interesting things draws an audience you can then later decide to sale something . If you cannot find something to sale them , you can use your audience to market for other business men selling other things and they can pay you to post something . You can charge as much as K500 per post like Mwebantu or Mutale mwanza . I once counted how many posts Mutale Mwanza was posting per day and they came to about 13 posts , that time she was trending a lot . that is K6500 per day muntu wandi .

I want you to think about something in terms of audiences. Justin Bieber has about 162 million followers on instagram alone . his fan base is 9 times the population of Zambia . So how much do you think he can charge to post an advert on his instagram to company’s like coca cola . You don’t have to be Justin Bieber but you can just target to reach in the millions and you can be used for advertising by Zambian companies. Most of our celebrities have 300,000 followers on average. Challenge yourself to make something so interesting that you attract people and you can be rich and famous from advertising or selling a product.

6. FB PAGE MANAGEMENT

How about managing peoples FB pages , You see education hasn’t yet caught up with managing of FB pages so there are no formal courses teaching people this . You can draw you expert opinion and just teach people how to do it , you don’t even need to be an expert but just pretend to be one lol . Learn tactics to sponsor pages and draw people to your clients page and write something that makes the customers buy . Depending on your clientele you can even get as much as K5000 per page you manage . I will try and jump into this too with big companies . Some companies have 1 million followers but when they post something they get 2 likes . These people need you to talk and talk . Look at ZCAS , Their page is incredibly boring . Yet people want to know about courses to study and how long they take . People want some career advice but all the do is post enroll now , enroll now , enroll what !?! . ZCAS needs me to hire me to manage their page and pay me K20,000 . I will get people excited about enrolling .

I’ve been a business founder for close to 30 years, and a business exec for more than two decades. As someone who has been on both ships, I wish more and more people spoke openly about two truths that haven’t changed over the years.

First: entrepreneurship is very difficult.
Second: raising money and making your start-up a success is even more difficult.

If you're an entrepreneur, I'll tell you this for free: entrepreneurship isn’t just driven by ambition or ideas; it demands survival. The unpredictability, the constant twists and turns, and the lessons you have to learn that can't be learned any other way. If anyone tells you that the "survival phase is just in the early days”, they’re either lying, lucky, or haven’t been in business for long.

Entrepreneurship is a nice career path when you see the glamorous moments of successful CEOs, but in 80% of entrepreneurship careers, people fail. Products don’t work, ideas fail, and marketing campaigns fall flat, to the point that no one cares about what you built.

In those moments, you’ll question your talent. You’ll doubt your choices. You’ll wonder if choosing entrepreneurship is worth it.

And the sad part is that there’s no safety net. No breaks. No social security in entrepreneurship. Most entrepreneurs don’t stop because the idea didn’t work. They stopped because it got hard and stayed hard. A quiet week turns into self-doubt. Sales dip, and suddenly they’re questioning everything. Not because the plan was wrong… but because it didn’t work fast.

I'm not sharing this to scare you out of your business idea. I'm just telling you the harsh truth so you know what you're jumping into. Entrepreneurship is reserved for those who have warrior minds, competitive egos, and an unstoppable keep-going mentality.

The ones who win aren’t always the smartest or the luckiest—they’re the ones who refuse to stop.

So, keep building, keep adapting, keep pivoting, keep innovating, and trust that the work will pay

This does not make any sense. I am just furious. Something has to give, we can't continue like this, Africa must break this cursed cycle.

Why can't we buy from each other, for goodness sake?

a) Angola buys $300M worth of milk from Portugal and New Zealand yearly.

b) Mozambique spends $94M on Russian wheat, while Zambia has over 250,000 tons of wheat nearby.

c) Zimbabwe imports over $30M in chicken from Brazil, despite South Africa’s massive poultry production.

d) Nigeria spends over $500M yearly importing tomato paste, while over 45% of local tomatoes perish due to poor storage.

e) Ivory Coast exports over $3.6B worth of cocoa beans annually, but imports chocolate products at 3–5x the price.

f) Kenya imports over $200M of rice yearly, despite Tanzania producing a surplus.

g) DR Congo imports over $60M of fish annually, while having the second-largest river system in the world.

h) Ethiopia imports $500M+ in tomato paste while domestic harvests rot.

i) Ghana exports over $6B in gold annually, yet spends millions importing jewelry.

j) Malawi imports $12M+ of maize during shortages, even though Zambia next door has surplus stock.

k) Angola buys milk from Portugal & New Zealand. SA has 3.3 Billion liters of milk yearly

l) Mozambique spends $94 Million on Russian Wheat. Zambia next door has over 250 000 ton of wheat

About $167 Million yearly is spent outside SADC on things we can buy from each other
