Chinese mainland reports 68 new confirmed cases

Chinese health authority said Tuesday that it received reports of 68 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Monday, including four imported cases and 64 locally-transmitted ones.

Fifty-seven of the 64 locally-transmitted cases were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, six in Liaoning Province, and one in Beijing Municipality, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

No deaths related to the disease or new suspected COVID-19 cases were reported Monday.

Sixteen COVID-19 patients were newly discharged from hospitals after recovery, the commission said.

As of Monday, the overall confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland had reached 83,959, including 391 patients who were still being treated, with 20 in severe conditions.

Altogether 78,934 people had been discharged after recovery, and 4,634 had died of the disease on the mainland, the commission said.

Two new imported cases were reported in Shanghai on Monday, while Beijing and Yunnan Province each saw one new imported case.

By the end of Monday, a total of 2,053 imported cases had been reported on the mainland. Of them, 1,971 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 82 remained hospitalized, with two in serious conditions. No deaths from the imported cases had been reported.

There was still one suspected COVID-19 case, it added.

According to the commission, 14,590 close contacts were still under medical observation after 184 people were discharged from medical observation Monday. (Xinhua)

Chinese premier congratulates Lee Hsien Loong on re-election as Singaporean PM

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has congratulated Lee Hsien Loong on his re-election as 's prime minister.

In his message sent on Monday, Li said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Lee, Singapore's economy has maintained a good momentum for a long period of time.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Singaporean government has taken decisive measures, achieving positive results in epidemic prevention and control and gradual economic and social recovery.

Noting that China and Singapore are friendly neighbors, Li said that China highly values bilateral ties.

Xi calls for making AIIB new platform for building community with shared future for mankind

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for making the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) a new platform that promotes development for all its members and facilitates the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

He called on efforts to make the AIIB a new type of multilateral development bank that promotes development across the world, a new type of development platform progressing with the times, a new type of high-performance institution for international cooperation and a new paradigm of multilateral cooperation.

The AIIB, proposed by Xi in late 2013, was officially launched in January 2016.

"The initiative is designed to develop infrastructure and connectivity in Asia and deepen regional cooperation for shared development," Xi said.

From the 57 founding members to today's membership of 102 spanning the six continents of Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and Oceania, the AIIB has grown from strength to strength and provided nearly 20 billion U.S. dollars in infrastructure investment to its members.
