New MPs to Report for Registration on August 30!

Newly elected Members of Parliament are required to report to the National Assembly on Sunday, 30th August 2026, for registration and orientation.

Clerk of the National Assembly LOVENESS MAYAKA says the exercise is in preparation for the commencement of the Fourteenth National Assembly.

Mrs. MAYAKA says all newly elected Members of Parliament are required to report to Parliament Buildings to facilitate a smooth and efficient registration process.

She says the Members are required to provide copies of their National Registration Cards, spouses' NRCs where applicable and parents' NRCs where applicable.

Mrs. MAYAKA says the MPs will further be expected to present children's birth records where applicable, marriage certificates or affidavits of marriage where applicable and Zambia Qualifications Authority-verified qualifications, and passports where available.\

She says the MPs will also be required to provide their Taxpayer Identification Numbers, NAPSA social security numbers where applicable, and banking details.

Mrs. MAYAKA has urged all newly elected Members of Parliament to ensure that the required documentation is readily available to facilitate the registration process.

This is according to a statement issued to ZNBC News by Mrs. MAYAKA.

Chief Justice confirms receipt of presidential petition, sends it to ConCourt

CHIEF Justice Mumba Malila has received an electronic copy of a presidential election petition seeking to challenge the August 13 election outcome, although the Judiciary says the documents were sent to his private email in a highly irregular manner.

The Judiciary said the documents, described as the “people’s presidential petition,” were sent to Dr Malila by a member of the public and contain a challenge to the presidential election outcome and associated documents.

In a statement issued today, Judiciary Deputy Director-Corporate Communications Kalumba Slavin said the Chief Justice had acknowledged receipt of the communication.

Slavin said the Judiciary was aware of social media claims suggesting that the petition had already been formally filed.

Slavin, however, said sending official court documents to the Chief Justice’s private email was not the normal procedure.

“The Chief Justice finds the mode of communication of official court documents through his private address to be highly irregular,” Slavin said.

The Judiciary said despite the irregular mode of submission, Dr Malila had exceptionally used his administrative powers to refer the documents to the Constitutional Court for consideration of the filing of the petition.

“He has quite exceptionally, using his administrative powers, referred the documents received to the Constitutional Court for its consideration on the issue of the filing of the petition,” Slavin said.

Furthermore, the Judiciary disclosed that the affected parties would hear from the Constitutional Court in due course.

The development comes after former Law Association of Zambia president Linda Kasonde, governance activist Brebner Changala and LCK Freedom Foundation Limited moved to challenge President Hakainde Hichilema’s victory in the August 13 presidential election.

HH to Be Sworn In September 1, 2026

The swearing-in of President-elect HAKAINDE HICHILEMA will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Secretary to the Cabinet PATRICK KANGWA says the seven-day period provided for filing a petition challenging the presidential election has expired without the Judiciary receiving any petition.

Mr. KANGWA says the swearing-in will proceed in accordance with Article 105 of the Constitution of Zambia Act No. 2 of 2016.

He said in a statement to ZNBC news that the venue for the inauguration ceremony will be announced in due course.

MAZABUKA CENTRAL YOUTH CHAIRPERSON PRAISED FOR CAMPAIGN MOBILISATION

Mazabuka Central Youth Chairperson Chrispin Chiila, popularly known as “Chrizet,” has been praised for his role in mobilising support for UPND candidates during the recent elections.

Chiila conducted roadshows and market outreach programmes across Mazabuka Central, including areas considered strongholds of independent candidates.

He also deployed two campaign trucks fitted with public address systems to spread the party’s message across the constituency.

Chiila further distributed campaign materials in support of Parliamentary candidate Vincent Lilanda, UPND councillors and President Hakainde Hichilema.

His mobilisation efforts have been credited as part of the grassroots campaign that helped strengthen the party’s support in Mazabuka Central.

We are truly humbled by the trust you have placed in our hands, to hold our nation's highest office and to be your servant, once more.

This election showed the world who we are: a nation of peace, a nation of law and order, a democratic nation that settles our differences at the ballot box, and nowhere else.

Over these months we have travelled to all 116 districts, to our nation's cities, our compounds, our villages, and our farms. We saw first-hand the challenges that our people are facing, and we resolved to work with you to solve these challenges, together.

To those citizens who preferred the ideas presented by our opponents, we hear you, and we will continue to work for you to ensure that every Zambian benefits from the development we are delivering.

As we return to work as your servant, we carry with us the memories of the children we met throughout the campaign, and we commit to building a better Zambia for all of you to inherit.
