7 STEPS TO OVERCOMING FAILURE

1 Face it - Don't deny it, don't bury your head in the sand, if it's a heartbreak, cry.

2. Fall in love with you - You can lose everything but never lose yourself. Look in the mirror and scream, "I love you!". Failure must never erode your self-worth.

3. Fight back - You only lose when you give up. There is so much money for a person who never gives up, think about Tiger Woods, from terrible personal and professional failures back to being number one because he refused to go away and make his enemies happy.

4. Forgive - Most failures are a result of trusting wrong people, totally forgive them.

5. Feed your faith - Don't rush to prove to people that you are still game. Take time to feed your faith through books, prayer and solitude.

6. Follow your dream - God gives you dreams to make you a star. Revisit your true dream and pursue your goals.

7. Formulate a plan - I meet several people with brilliant ideas but very few with plans. God gives success to plans, not ideas.

PRINCIPLES OF WORK.

This picture was taken 12 years ago when my career was kicking off, Just like any discipline, work has some principles that one can apply and succeed at any level of one’s career. Before we go any further, I would like to share a background story and how I managed to apply these principles to my advantage.

What started as a part time job to raise funds for my university studies became the beginning of a long and fulfilling career, over a decade ago when I was a sales agent, there was a promotion going on for the next step up – Sales Team Supervisor. There were two possible candidates, me and the other guy, both of us were just sales agents. On paper I stood a better chance because of my high school grades.

One day, as I was chatting with one of the team members and asked him what he thought my chances were. ‘Very slim’, he replied. I explained to him what I could offer, ‘you are right,’ he replied, ‘but you don’t walk like a supervisor’. ‘And the other guy does?’ and he was right, the other guy got the job. What he was simply trying to say by “I don’t walk like a supervisor” was that I don’t carry myself as one.

Now I had to work under someone I thought was not better than me, but the difference was that he walked right. From that moment, I studied that walk very carefully. My other colleague was right, there was a supervisor’s walk in this guy. I noticed that every team member had their own walk, in short, they carried themselves in a certain way.

As I spent time watching the walk, I realized that there was another walk, the manager’s walk. This was our overall boss, the Territory Sales Manager at that point, and he became my inspiration, till now I still see him as one of the people that have played a major part in my career. His style of attire, way of speaking, his behavior and just how he carried himself all together. At this point, I realized that having good grades only isn’t enough for a job, what I needed was an entire makeover. And to top it all, I enrolled for my Business Admin with the University of Zambia. And gradually, as I watched, I realised that how you carry yourself was more important, how you talked to colleagues, what you said at meetings, all that was being judged, evaluated and acted upon.

It wasn’t enough to be able to do the job only, if you wanted to get promoted, you had to be seen as the right type, it’s all about creating that type. Of course, you’ve got to be able to do the job in the first place. But a lot of people can do it too, what makes you stand out? What makes you a suitable candidate for promotion? What makes you different?

After observing our manager’s walk, I switched from practicing the supervisor’s walk and jumped ahead to the manager’s walk. A few years later, our boss left the organization, and I was promoted to the position of sales manager. I was now the supervisor’s manager.

The other guy had the walk, he looked right, sounded right. But the bottom line was, he couldn’t do the job as well as he should have done. I was put over him because they couldn’t demote him after having promoted him just a few years ago, it would have looked bad. All they needed was someone to oversee the business and correct a few issues.

By practicing the manager’s walk I got the promotion, but I also got it because I paid great attention to doing my job well. Once in this new job, I had to quickly learn not only my new role and all its responsibilities, but also the position below, which I had not really held. I had stood in for supervisors, but I had never really been one, and now I was the supervisor’s manager.

There was only one secret that led to this, I spent every spare second available, evenings or weekends studying everything I could that would help me to get the job. But I told no one about it, in a short time I had mastered enough to be able to do the job well.

I see you have questions. “How did you manage to climb up the ladder, were you not manipulative?” No, I didn’t make anyone do anything for me, it is me that changed and improved myself over time. The right people just saw my potential.
One would ask.
• Do I have to become someone else? No, you may need to change your behavior a bit, but not your personality or values, you’ll go on being you, but a smart and better you.

• Is it easy to spot others trying to observe the dynamics around their bosses’ jobs and use them to their advantage? Yes, but the good players will never let you see what they are doing, they’re too good for that. But once you become a player too, it becomes easier to see what strategy people are using at any given time.

This just allows you to be awake and aware, living in the moment and taking advantage of your own abilities. The bottom line is that you must be able to do your job right before anything, do it well. These principles are not for impostors.

If you don’t perform your duties well as expected of you, you will just mess up along the way, if you do your job right, you will benefit as follows:

• Get promoted.
• Get on better with your colleagues.
• Feel better about yourself and enjoy your work more.
• Understand your job better and your boss’s point of view.
• Take more pride in both you and your work.
• Set a good example for junior staff and contribute more to your company.
• Be valued and respected.

These principles are simple, effective and practical. They are your steps to building confidence and creating a new and more powerful you, morally and ethically. They enhance personal standards and elevate your individual capacity.

MONEY ASIDE, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A JOB?

I know someone's response to the above question will be " The money you have put aside ". 🤣🤣 Money answers all things, right? I hear you. Anyway, read on and get to know how I personally benefited from working for a company that paid me a very low salary as compared to my experience and knowledge.

As a job seeker, it’s important to recognise that companies are at different stages of development and that this directly impacts their capacity to remunerate employees. Even within the same industry, similar positions can have widely varying salary scales. Therefore, it’s unrealistic to maintain the same salary expectations across all organisations that offer you an interview.

For instance, start-ups often struggle to offer competitive salaries unless they have significant capital to accommodate experienced employees who come with higher demands. However, this doesn’t mean start-ups lack value. While financial compensation may be lower, they typically provide a dynamic work environment with opportunities for growth, diverse responsibilities, and the chance to build something from scratch, at some point, I once worked for a start-up company in the Fintech Industry. Despite the salary being the lowest as compared to other job positions I have held before. I must say the experience and knowledge I acquired from that job was priceless. This translates into long-term rewards and outweigh the immediate salary benefits that one can ask for.

Throughout the time I was with a start-up company, I had one of the leading roles and interacted with different executives from some of the top companies in Zambia and across Africa. I had an opportunity to mingle with people from institutions like the Bank of Zambia, Power Pay Africa, ZICTA, STANBIC, Flutterwave (One of the leading Fintech Companies in Nigeria and across Africa), and the list goes on. In short, let me just say I had an opportunity to interact with industry leaders from different companies in Zambia and across Africa that have greatly contributed to my career growth. Above all, I met incredible people like madam Beatrice Mulenga was our HR, and through her I got links for a scholarship to study with one of the leading universities in Africa. Austin Nkhata, our finance manager, Connie, Taza and the management team comprising of amazing people like Mr Murape, Mr Ayo and the rest of the team. These people had confidence in me and gave me a platform to exhibit my knowledge and skills.

In contrast, more established companies tend to offer better financial packages because they have the resources to do so. They provide greater stability, structured work environments, and clearer career progression. However, these benefits may come with more rigid job roles and slower paths to advancement compared to the fast-paced, flexible nature of start-ups.

The key for job seekers is to balance salary expectations with an understanding of the company’s stage of development, current industry trends, and the full benefits package a company offers. It’s essential to look beyond the salary and instead focus on growth opportunities, job satisfaction, and the potential for long-term career development. This mindset helps manage expectations and allows you to evaluate what truly matters to you in the long run, rather than just focusing on immediate financial gain.

With all I have said in mind, it becomes clear that if you truly understand your priorities and goals, you won’t feel the need to apply for every position you come across unless you're really desperate for a job. Instead, you’ll be more selective by applying only to opportunities that align with your long-term aspirations.

INTERVIEW TIP FOR THE WEEKEND.

One tricky question that always comes out as if it's very simple is when you are asked;

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST STRENGTHS?

WARNING: This question seems like a through ball because it requires you to talk about the positive side of you, but be prepared. You don't want to come across as egotistical or arrogant. Neither is this a time to be humble.

BEST ANSWER: Like I shared last Friday, your key strategy is to first uncover your interviewer's greatest wants and needs before you answer questions. And from the previous article, you already know how to do this.

Prior to any interview, you should have a list prepared of your greatest strengths. You should also have a specific example or two, which illustrates each strength. An example chosen from your most recent and most impressive achievements. You should, have this list of your greatest strengths and corresponding examples from your achievements so well committed to memory that you can recite them cold after being shaken awake at 2:30AM.

NOTE: Never talk about strengths that are not directly related to the role you are being interviewed for, always try to match it with the role. For example, you can’t talk about how skilled you are as a football player when being interviewed for an IT related position. Try to talk about your strengths related to the job.

Once you have your strengths listed, you can now answer the questions, indicating how that can positively impact your performance if offered the job.

All the best.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STAYING ACTIVE AND VISIBLE AS YOU LOOK FOR EMPLOYMENT OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Looking for employment opportunities is not just about sending job applications and waiting for a response.

While applying for jobs, it's advisable to stay active in other areas of your life. Engage in social, church activities, sports, and voluntary service. These activities connect you with people who can directly or indirectly offer opportunities you seek. By being an active participant, you increase your chances of being noticed.

When people see your dedication and learn about your goals, they are more likely to remember you for business or employment opportunities. Sometimes, they may even recommend you to others who can help.

As you search for employment or business opportunities, make a conscious effort to belong to social organisations and make yourself visible. Simply sending applications and isolating yourself at home won’t solve your problem.

The key is to put yourself out there.

The little boy succeeded because he believed he could do it. Secondly, he succeeded because there was no one to tell him that it's impossible to make a chicken sit on the bike.

Sometimes all we need to succeed is just to believe in ourselves and never listen to any negative talks around us. So many people will try and project their negativity on you based on any bad past experiences they encountered, it's entirely up to you to stand your ground and stick to what you believe in. Remember, it starts with you.
