A few gifts here. A dinner there. A trip away. Extra groceries. Family visiting. And then January arrives…

Estimate what you'd like to spend over the festive season, add in the bigger January expenses you know are coming, and start putting a little aside with each payday.

Your financial plan is a lot like a rugby team. 🏉

You wouldn't send 15 players onto the field who all do exactly the same job, and your finances shouldn't rely on one strategy either.

Some parts of your plan are there to protect you when things go wrong. Others are working towards retirement, growing wealth, protecting your family or building the future you want.

Individually, each has a role. The real strength comes from getting them to work together.

Turning 18 comes with a lot of exciting firsts, but there's one milestone we don't talk about enough: financial independence.

In South Africa, 18 marks the age of legal majority, bringing greater responsibility for contracts and financial decisions.

It's a great opportunity for parents to shift the conversation from simply managing money for their children to teaching them how to manage it themselves.

Talk about banking fees. Explain credit before they use it. Introduce saving and investing. Show them a payslip. Discuss tax. Help them understand why starting small and starting early can matter so much.

You don't need to hand your child a large investment portfolio at 18 to give them a financial head start.

Sometimes, understanding money is the head start.
