Single Discretionary Allowance Increased to R2 Million
In the 2026 Budget Speech, the Minister of Finance announced a significant adjustment to South Africa’s exchange control framework: the Single Discretionary Allowance has been increased from R1 million to R2 million per calendar year.
This adjustment reflects the evolving needs of South Africans who wish to invest and diversify globally, while also responding to the impact of inflation and currency fluctuations.
By doubling the allowance, government is providing individuals with greater flexibility and capacity to manage their international financial affairs, supporting broader participation in global markets while maintaining regulatory oversight.
This is a meaningful step toward enabling South Africans to expand their global footprint with confidence.
