New season, new money habits

Spring cleaning isn't just for your closet.

It's a good excuse to spring-clean your cash flow too. Sort the drawer you've been avoiding. Set the reminder you keep snoozing. Move something, anything, into savings.

Small resets add up. If you're on Paymenow, your savings pocket is sitting right there in the app, fee-free to deposit and withdraw, whenever you're ready.

New season. New habits. Same money, working a little harder.

One week. One conversation. The work continues. That is a wrap on Money Smart Week South Africa 2026, and what a week to be part of.

We are proud to have participated in this national campaign alongside the National Treasury of South Africa, the FSCA South Africa, Fintech Association of South Africa (FINASA), and dozens of organisations committed to making financial education more accessible for every South African. This week we talked about financial literacy, earned wage access, payslip literacy, payday scams and why money conversations matter.

To everyone who read, saved, shared, or dropped a question in the comments: thank you.

The conversation does not stop today.

We do not talk about money enough. This week, let us change that.

In many South African homes, money is the topic nobody brings up, even when it is the thing weighing on everyone. We avoid talking about debt at the dinner table. We do not ask our colleagues how they are really coping. We do not tell our kids what things actually cost. That silence is expensive.

Financial stress does not go away when we stop talking about it, but something shifts when we start. You do not need all the answers to start the conversation.

Who is someone in your life you could talk to about money this week?

Ever look at your payslip and wonder where the difference between your gross salary and your take-home pay actually went?

Understanding your deductions is one of the quickest ways to take control of your financial wellness. Here is a simple breakdown of what those lines mean:

➡️ Gross Pay vs Net Pay: Gross pay is what you earn before deductions. Net pay is the actual amount paid into your bank account.
➡️ PAYE (Pay-As-You-Earn): Income tax collected directly by your employer on behalf of SARS, calculated according to national tax brackets.
➡️ UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund): A 1% deduction from your gross salary (matched by a 1% contribution from your employer) that provides financial support if you lose your job, become ill, or take maternity leave.
➡️ Retirement and Medical Aid: Company-arranged contributions toward a provident or pension fund and your healthcare cover.
➡️ Other Deductions: Voluntary contributions such as union fees, funeral cover, or company benefits.

Taking five minutes each month to review your payslip ensures your deductions are accurate and helps you budget with clarity.

What is one payslip line item you always found confusing when you received your first salary? Drop your thoughts below.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙀𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙒𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝘼𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 (𝙀𝙒𝘼) 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧?

It is your money. You earned it. So why wait until payday? EWA is not a loan. It is access to the wages you have already earned, right when you need them.

Research shows people primarily use this access for critical work-related expenses, food, and utilities.

Women are the driving force behind South Africa's workforce. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, we celebrate the women who build, lead, and provide every single day.

When women have control over their own financial wellbeing, the impact is profound. 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔-𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑡-𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑑𝑒𝑏𝑡, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑢𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠.

True financial inclusion puts the power back where it belongs.
