The political situation in SA is probably the biggest worry we have around the future of the country. Government and our leadership is in a mess on a number of fronts. The ongoing pandemic and the effect it will inevitably have upon our economy combined with crime and corruption which remain major concerns, underline the need for us to consider investing our assets in a safe, off shore jurisdiction.

It would also seem likely that the government will at some point have to consider adopting an aggressive taxation strategy in order to try to rebuild the nation’s reserves post Corona. It is also not inconceivable that SARB could consider reducing or even removing the current allowance of R10,000,000 for overseas investment in order to try and protect the value of the Rand.

The decision to close our St Francis Bay office from the 1st May, was not an easy one to make, however given the current situation and the requirement to work from home we were left with no real choice.

I want to assure all of our financial services clients and indeed anyone else wanting advice that this in no way impacts upon the quality of service we provide. We continue to have operational capability.

All meetings will now be conducted online and I am pleased to report that all of the investment houses and insurance companies we work with have developed systems to enable electronic applications etc.

Private Mail Bag X3.

As a result of the ongoing crisis, we have decided to close our offices in the village as from the 1st May. This decision is entirely based upon the Governments advice, which we wholly support, to work from home whenever possible.

SEEFF will be taking over the post boxes and our offices from that date, so they will keep you informed as to the ongoing situation for the collection of your mail once this becomes possible.

Since SARB cut the interest rates last week the Rand has steadily declined against all major currencies. Bank Paribas has suggested that we may be in for a further 1.25% cut as we try to fight the economic effects of COVID-19.

This would suggest further deterioration in the exchange rates. With this in mind $ based Life Assurance and Savings plans are an extremely attractive option.

Some are fairly simple and easy to understand, others not.

The reserve bank has today cut the repo rate by a further 1.00%, to 4.25%. This combined with the recent downgrades can only lead to a further decline in the value of the Rand vs harder currencies such as $, £ and Euro. Over the last month we have seen a depreciation of over 15% in the value of the rand against the Pound and 12.5% against the Dollar.

Now more than ever one should consider diversifying assets off shore to protect against a further decrease in the value of the rand as the situation unfolds.

In view of the evolving Covid-19 crisis, we have enacted our disaster contingency plan.

As of 14.00 tomorrow 25th March 2020 our offices will be closed for the foreseeable future. We will however maintain operational capability throughout these difficult times.

PRIVATE MAIL BAG X3 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Please note that as of today we will be operating a restricted service for the collection of mail.

In an effort to protect our staff and clients the office will only be open between 10am and 2pm on Wednesdays and Fridays until further notice.

In addition to the restricted hours please note that wherever possible we would ask clients to respect the social distancing measures.

All of the boxes have been sanitised and will be on a daily basis prior to opening.
