Find your last payslip and look for the medical aid line. Now ask yourself: do I know exactly what I get for that?
The municipality pays a subsidy towards your medical aid, as long as you're on an accredited scheme. So you're not just spending your own money - make sure the whole amount is working for you.

💡 Here's what you need to know:
✅ Look beyond the premium. Hospital networks, co-payments, chronic medication and day-to-day benefits may also change.
✅ Don't downgrade without understanding the risks. A lower monthly contribution could mean higher out-of-pocket expenses when you need medical care.
✅ Think carefully before switching schemes. Waiting periods and late-joiner penalties may apply, depending on your membership history.
✅ Review your gap cover. Make sure it still provides suitable protection against unexpected medical shortfalls.
✅ Review your changing needs. Planned procedures, chronic conditions, retirement or changes in your family could affect which plan suits you best.

Your medical aid comes off your payslip, but the advice about it can come from someone you choose.
As a municipal worker you are allowed to have your own independent broker. HR still handles the admin - your broker helps you work out which scheme and option actually suits you and your family, and looks after you when you need to claim.

"No underwriting." Sounds like jargon - here's what it means for you. 👇
Normally when you join or change medical aid, the scheme can:
✔ make you wait up to three months before you can claim
✔ make you wait up to 12 months for a condition you already have
✔ add a late-joiner penalty to your monthly contribution if you join later in life
If you're already on one of the four municipal schemes, or you've had no medical aid for more than a year, you can move without any of that until 31 December, with your new cover starting 1 January 2027. That's the window. Want to know what it means for you? Send us a message or call 017 638 1048.
