Switch Board number 011 535 3000
50 Saxon Road, Hurlingham Sandton, 2196 V.

Tara Hospital is a Specialised Psychiatric Hospital, and we provide tertiary / quaternary level psychiatric care. For our outpatient services we work strictly according to catchment areas as well as the required level of psychiatric services. For inpatient services Tara Hospital has waiting lists for all the inpatient programmes / wards and priority is given to patients currently admitted to an ac

ute unit and requiring longer admissions for stabilization. Tara Hospital does not have a casualty / emergency department, and we do not have an onsite laboratory of radiological services. Should you arrive at Tara without an appointment you will be assessed by our doctor on call and managed accordingly. Should you require admission, a referral to an acute hospital will be made as this may require medical work (laboratory and radiology). In case of an emergency and to avoid the delay of the Tara Hospital needing to transfer the patient to an acute facility it is recommended that you go directly to your nearest casualty. Referral is done by means of a referral form completed by your treating psychiatrist. This The form can be obtained from Tara Admissions by calling 011 535 3064 and returned to [email protected]

• Patients are placed on a waiting list and are accepted for admission when a bed is available or as per multidisciplinary team assessment (for specialised units).
• Patients are referred by psychiatric units in general hospitals, psychiatric registrars or consultants working at community clinics and psychiatrists in private practice.
• Patients following up at Tara may also be placed on the waiting list when admission is needed.
• Patients with serious medical or physical health conditions will be assessed for suitability on a case-by-case basis as we do not have access to onsite physician or surgical support, neither onsite laboratory nor radiology services.
• We do not provide substance rehabilitation services.
• The outpatient departments and pharmacy operational hours are 7:30 to 16:00. Vision

On the 5th May each year, the world observes World Hand Hygiene Day to highlight the importance of proper hand hygiene in preventing infections and saving lives. In recognition of this important day, the Infection Prevention Control Team commemorated the occasion under the theme, “Action Saves Lives.”

Hand hygiene promotion activities were conducted for patients, families, and healthcare workers to reinforce the importance of clean hands in healthcare settings and everyday life. IPC champions led energetic aerobics sessions and introduced a fun hand hygiene song to make healthy practices more engaging, enjoyable, and memorable for everyone involved.

Proper hand hygiene remains one of the simplest, most effective, and cost-efficient ways to prevent the spread of infections, protect vulnerable patients, and promote safer healthcare environments. Washing hands correctly with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitiser at the right moments can significantly reduce the transmission of harmful germs and improve patient safety.

Through initiatives such as these, Tara Hospital continues to promote infection prevention, health awareness, and a culture of safety and wellness for both staff and patients.

In recognition of World Move for Health Day, Tara Hospital staff and patients came together for a meaningful day focused on wellness, unity, and healthy living.

The programme included a fun walk, aerobics sessions, health screenings, and team-building activities, all aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being in the workplace and beyond.

We were also honoured to have various stakeholders participate in the event, including GEMS, Virgin Active, SADAG, Lace Up for Mental Health, as well as an Occupational Therapy stand where refreshments and food were available for purchase.

A special highlight was the involvement of endurance athlete Donovan Shirley, who joined the initiative in support of mental health awareness. Donovan, who recently won the South African Backyard Ultra after completing an incredible 288km and breaking the SA soil record, is currently raising awareness and funds for SADAG through his running initiatives. His passion for combining exercise and mental health advocacy brought great inspiration to both staff and patients alike.

Through initiatives such as these, Tara Hospital continues to support mental health awareness and encourage healthier lifestyles within our organisation and community because a healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand.
