Two Airlink passenger jets swept over Cape Town Stadium before the Springboks faced the All Blacks on 29 August, close enough to send the crowd roaring and social media into overdrive. Almost immediately, the images travelled far beyond the stadium.

TFG is rethinking the size of its store network as sales growth remains subdued.

Group sales increased by just 0.2% to R23 billion, although growth was 2% when currency movements were excluded. In Africa, sales rose 3.4%, while credit sales declined by 2.5%.
The retailer plans to close 80 stores during FY27 and another 200 over the following two years across its markets.

For investors, the key question is whether a smaller, more productive footprint can reduce costs and protect margins when sales growth is limited. Closing underperforming stores may strengthen efficiency, but the wider trading environment remains challenging.

Strong growth does not always lead to a stronger share price.

Palo Alto Networks reported revenue growth of 34%, yet its shares fell around 5% in after-hours trading. The concern was not demand, but profitability: rising costs placed pressure on margins.

Expectations also matter. After gaining around 100% this year, the company entered its results with a great deal of optimism already reflected in its valuation.

For investors, the reaction highlights an important earnings-season dynamic. A company can deliver impressive growth and still disappoint the market if margins weaken or the results fall short of elevated expectations.

Strengthening delivery may help the retailer respond to changing customer expectations. However, fulfilment can be costly, while fewer store visits could reduce the additional higher-margin purchases often made during a trip to the dispensary.

For investors, the key questions are whether delivery adds new sales or simply shifts existing purchases into a more expensive channel, and what that means for margins, store productivity and earnings growth.

US inflation has now remained above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target for 65 consecutive months.

Following a hawkish message from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole, markets are pricing in a 53% probability of a September interest-rate hike.

Higher US rates can influence far more than the American economy. They can strengthen the dollar, raise global borrowing costs and affect currencies such as the rand.

A rate hike is not guaranteed, but the market’s expectations have clearly shifted.
