That does not make the number good or bad on its own. It means the reason behind it matters.

Sanlam already owns most of Santam. Now it wants the rest.

The group has offered R505 in cash for each eligible Santam share it does not already own. That is 26.6% above Santam’s closing share price on 2 October.

Why pay a premium for a business you already control? Full ownership would allow Sanlam to bring Santam completely under one roof, simplify the group’s structure and remove the costs and requirements of maintaining

Santam as a separately listed company.

If shareholders and regulators approve the deal, Santam will become wholly owned by Sanlam and leave the JSE.
