MYTH - I cannot afford financial planning

TRUTH - Financial planning is for anyone who wants to organise their finances, set goals and have a plan to reach those goals

Just incase you didn’t have goals to look at accomplishing this year, this could be a great starting point. These can literally be life changing and life saving.

A little effort in seeing these through definitely goes a long way, for yourself and your family.

No financial plan could have prepared us for the pandemic, but going forward, there are smart changes we can make to our money habits.

As we approach the end of a challenging but eye-opening year, it is imperative to reflect on the year that has been, as well as the year that will be. Everything needs to be taken into consideration, the good and the bad. A realistic but decisive plan of action also needs to be drawn up - and the necessary action plans put in place.

Do enjoy the remainder of the year, safely and with loved ones - friends and family.

Let us all get our energies back, and tackle the new year head-on. Looking forward to engaging with you all in 2021.

What is the take away?

1. Review your portfolio regularly - or atleast annually.
2. Heed the call to have your affairs in order (at all times) - but don't be caught in the trap of doing so hastily.
3. Ensure that your adviser does a thorough job on your planning - no rush jobs are acceptable (for your family's sake).
4. The vaccines are not the end of this pandemic.
5. More challenges await.

‘Buy when everyone else is selling and hold until everyone else is buying. That’s not just a catchy slogan. It’s the very essence of successful investing.’

- J. Paul Getty

‘This philosophy plays very heavily on human psychology. We don’t react very well to bad news. We get flustered, make rash decisions, and typically make mistakes. In the stock market, the point where everyone is selling a particular kind of stock typically means it’s going for cheap, Getty says to buy at this point.

However an important point to note is the waiting afterwards. Don’t turn around and sell instantaneously, be patient, wait until the opportune moment. The thought is that in the stock market, as well as in life, we need to keep a cool head. And just like the stock market, life may crash, but it’s always going to bounce back. Keep your chin up, and a level head until it does!’

A very common thing I experience in my space is last minute cancellations by clients, which I often only find out when logging into our scheduled meeting or arriving at their premises. I take no issue if you extend me the courtesy to postpone or cancel.

What I do take issue with is you denying yourself and your family the opportunity to put in place measures that will minimise the hardships experienced when life decides to happen - over that last minute meeting you are summoned to from work.

Remember that you will be easily replaced by your employer, but what impact will your non commitment to a financial plan and discussion mean to your family?
