There are a number of trends that are impacting claims in the industry.

“Amidst this environment, insurers must ensure that the automated inflationary increases relating to buildings sums insured are maintained to ensure that policyholders are not out of pocket should they have a claim, especially total loss claims,” says Tarina Vlok , our MD.

Below are Tarina’s top tips for policyholders in the current inflationary environment:

•Ensure that your building is adequately insured with the insurer’s inflationary increase on renewal. Rebuilding costs do not equal CPI inflation. This will ensure that your claim amount is not reduced in the event of a valid claim.

•The price of second-hand vehicles has increased higher than that of the retail prices we source from external databases. Ask your broker or advisor about vehicle options. Remember that your insurer (if you work with a well-known brand) will always aim to be fair to the policyholder in the event of a claim.

•At the very least, remember that is likely your insurer will only raise premiums to what they feel is necessary. This is why it is important to be insured with a reputable company. Remember the core principle of insurance is that you pay in accordance with the risk that is introduced to the pool.

•The best way to avoid renewal increases is not to claim, especially for smaller losses.

🚲 has become an expensive hobby in South Africa, especially amongst the .

“Cycling is a wonderful hobby that can cost the serious cyclist hundreds of thousands of rands. Even entry-level bicycles and associated gear can quickly escalate,” says Tarina Vlok our MD.

For South Africans, traditional bikes can cost anywhere from R10 000 to more than R250 000, while e-bikes can cost a minimum of R15 000. For the affluent, these numbers increase substantially.

“If you are riding a bike that is worth so much and park it in an area like the street or the back of your bakkie, the sad likelihood is that it may not be there when you get back. We see this time and time again,” she says.

Here are Tarina’s top tips for your :

•Bicycles are generally well made and able to withstand the rigors of cycling however bicycles need regular maintenance and failure to do so is often costly. It’s important to understand that bicycle insurance does not cover maintenance related expenses or damages incurred as a result of lack of maintenance.

•Ensure that your bicycle is insured for its replacement value and not for what you paid for it.

•Ensure that the correct model with all its accessories are included in your inventory.

•Don’t forget to insure your cycling gear and helmet, as these often get damaged in an accident.

•Do not ever leave your bicycle unattended. If you have to, ensure that it is secured to a building or your vehicle with the correct locking and securing devices.
