Volatility involves the changes in price of an asset, not the value of the asset.

To illustrate this, think of a company’s share price that changes drastically over a short period of time, in other words a lot of volatility. This basically means that the buyers and sellers in the market have very different opinions as to what the company’s shares are worth. The actual value of the company hasn’t changed, merely what a share in it should be worth. It is for this very reason that long-term investors are not much concerned with volatility as it has a minimal impact over longer-term investments.

Risk and volatility are often used interchangeably but they mean very different things.

When it comes to investing, risk is the possibility that an investment will fail to achieve an expected return, but what about volatility?

Volatility measures the change in price of an asset over time. This change can be either an increase or a decrease in price.

Long-term investors are less concerned with volatility as it has less of an impact on the investment over longer investment periods.

As an example, company share prices tend to be volatile over the short-term but over the long-term, they tend to outperform cash assets, which for the most part have less volatility in terms of price changes.
