Why are insurance premiums becoming so costly.....

The past few years have been a period of immense
economic hardship, which has adversely impacted countless
households and businesses. To help alleviate this hardship
experienced by so many, we implemented very low premium
increases, provided premium relief, and relaxed many
underwriting conditions. We also paid record levels of
claims, making an invaluable difference to the lives of so
many of our policyholders.
During this period, claims inflation continued to grow at
levels much higher than premium increases. The higher
costs of individual claims were, however, offset by a lower
claims frequency, and we are pleased that the low premium
increases effectively passed the benefit of the lower risk
environment on to clients. But, due to a multitude of drivers,
the risk environment and frequency of claims have changed
significantly, regrettably resulting in the need to now
implement the incremental premium increases.

The factors driving the premium increases are set out below and
we trust you will find these valuable in your engagements with
clients. We remain absolutely committed to doing everything
possible to ensure we keep increases to a minimum in the
circumstances, to segment them to reflect the underlying risk,
and to actively manage exceptions with you.

THE DRIVERS OF PREMIUM INCREASES

1. Climate change reality

An uncertain “new normal”
• Number of natural catastrophes increasing
• Costs growing – 10-year moving average increase of 5 – 7% annually

Drivers of the increase in catastrophe losses
• Increased frequency of catastrophic events caused by climate change
• Increased cost of catastrophic events caused by exposure accumulation due to
economic and population growth and urbanisation
• Lack of risk and flood control measures
SA is not exempt
• Extreme weather claims in Q4 2021 and Q1 2022
• KZN floods in April and May 2022
• SASRIA looting claims in July 2021
2. Cybercrime, an emerging risk we cannot escape
• Internet users in South Africa to increase by 12% to 65%
by 2030
• Digital channels to increase in demand
• Data to become an individual’s and a business’s greatest
asset
• SA most affected country for cybercrime in Africa in 2021,
with 230 million cyber-threat detections.
A challenging economic environment, both locally and
internationally, further impacts the increase in baseline levels
of risk. While economies move in cycles, current economic
conditions create a perfect storm.
3. The SA economy under pressure
• CPI (7,8%) and PPI (18%) at 30-year record levels
• Rand devaluation greater than 20%
• Persistent load shedding
• Key supply chain disruptions
4. Fuelled by global factors
• Slowdown in global growth
• Surging inflation driven by food and energy scarcity
• War in Ukraine

The combined effect of increasing risk and challenging economic conditions has resulted in
an unprecedented impact on insurance costs, reflected in substantial shifts in claims
frequency, claims severity and average cost of claims.

5. Claims frequency incrementally higher than pandemic years, above 2019 levels
• Year-on-year increase in road traffic volumes
• Power surge claims
• Significantly higher rainfall
6. Severity a growing concern
• Spike in high-value vehicle theft
• Higher average speed collisions
• Decline in fire protection services
• Road and rail infrastructure declining
• Reduced compliance with building regulations
• Decline in storm water management infrastructure
7. Surge in average cost per claim
• Supply chain disruptions
• Increases in second-hand car values
• Extended average car-hire days
• Equivalent rand cost of imported car parts and imported electronics, plant and machinery
• Increase in fraudulent claims - syndicates as well as opportunistic inflation of claims
While systemic risk is growing, reinsurance capacity is decreasing as reinsurers seek to
manage increasing volatility, global and local political uncertainty, presence of inflation and
sanctions following the war in Ukraine.
8. Increased cost of reinsurance and reduced capacity
• Premium increases
• Higher attachment points
• Narrowing of cover
• Review of occurrence definitions
The significant increase in the complexity of risk necessitates
the need for advice, the effective selection of cover to manage
cost, and the management of risk. The purpose and value
of insurance have never been more real or more valuable.
The substantial challenges presented by an increasing risk
environment form the foundation for providing incremental client
value and realising the incremental growth of our intermediated
insurance value proposition.

To avoid homeowners’ claims being repudiated due to limitations on buildings insurance, there are some key guidelines to keeping a home/building maintained that homeowners could follow to avoid a rejected claim and to assist with a smoother claims process.

Record keeping
Keep a record of all documents like guarantees, proof of anyone who has worked on repairs at the home, proof of payment, receipts, etc. Taking photographs is also a good way of keeping a record.

Clear gutters and drains
Gutters and drains can get clogged with debris over time, especially in the rainy season. Neglecting to clear the debris and secure gutters and downpipes, could prevent water from flowing freely which could cause damage to the property.

Treat wooden windows/doors

Treat wooden window frames and doors with a good quality varnish (or similar product) to prevent rot and water damage over time. Replace putty that is crumbling or cracking.

Prevent leaks

Make sure regular checks for leaks are done because some leaks can cause damp over time. Damp proofing walls also stops any rising damp. Leaks over a prolonged period can cause the ground to soften which could lead to structural damage and to incidents like a boundary wall collapsing. Leaks under and around appliances can also cause damage to walls and floors.

Thatch roof

Make sure to follow the instructions from the insurer regarding the treatment of thatch/lightning conductors and fire extinguishers. Make sure the lightning conductor is checked and maintained regularly. Fire extinguishers must be serviced once a year or after use.

Roof inspection

Frequently inspect the roof for broken, damaged/loose tiles, tiles that have moved out of place, especially in windy areas or following heavy rain and windstorms, and for termites or other vermin that may cause damage to the roof. Dark/brown marks on ceilings are indicators of missing tiles on the roof. Make sure that tree branches are cut away from the roof or building. Roofs (like flat roofs) should be sealed once a year and if done by a professional, proof or the guarantee should be kept safe.

Pump and motor maintenance

Pumps (borehole and swimming pool) and motors (gate and garage door) need to be serviced as per the manufacturer’s specification. Proof of maintenance helps to assist with an easier claims process.

Gas installation

When installing gas, make use of a reputable gas installer that can issue a certificate. Have gas appliances like geysers, stoves and heaters serviced as per manufacturers’ specifications.

Wood fireplace

Chimneys must be cleaned and inspected once a year. Failure to do so can cause a fire and smoke damage.

SANTAM PROUDLY ANNOUNCES WHATSAPP POLICY ADMINISTRATION AND CLAIMS CHANNELS FOR CLIENTS
________________________________________

Dear Intermediary

Creating intuitive client journeys enabled by technology is one of Santam’s strategic building blocks as part of our efforts in building a FutureFit Santam. In pursuit of this strategic intent to deliver on stakeholder expectations now and into the future, we are thrilled to launch WhatsApp as a brand-new channel for our clients.

This new WhatsApp functionality enables self-service for policy documentation requests as well as claims services. With this convenient and instant self-service at the clients’ fingertips, policy documents can be requested instantaneously anytime, anywhere, and claims can be registered and tracked from the palm of their hand.

The policy self-service functionality enables Santam Personal Lines clients to request policy documents by sending a WhatsApp message. The client will need to confirm the request by submitting the main policyholder’s ID number and the one-time pin (OTP) that will be sent via SMS to the cellular number listed on the policy. By using this functionality, clients will have the option to request a policy schedule, a Confirmation of Cover letter or a territorial (border) letter. The availability for commercial documents will follow during a subsequent phase.

You will receive a notification message via the Broker Portal when your client has requested a policy schedule. Click here for a step-by-step guide that will guide you through this notification message.

The claims self-service and chat functionality enable Santam clients and you as intermediary to register claims, track an existing claim, upload claims-related documentation such as damage reports, photos, etc. and request emergency assistance and support such as home-drive assistance and home-based service support, or chat to us about their claim.

Your benefits for using the WhatsApp self-service include:
• Client support from the palm of your hand
• Reduced dependency on Contact Centres
• Immediate and direct chat with dedicated claims service consultants at anytime, anywhere
• Better client support and satisfaction
• Less administrative effort in your office
How does it all work?
• You and your clients must add the Santam self-service contact to your phone by using 0860 505 911 for claims and 0860 102 001 for policy documentation or scan the QR codes in the respective infographics for policy documentation administration and claims services.
• Then open WhatsApp and find Santam self-service under your contacts. Start your chat by typing “Hi” and follow the clear prompts to complete your request.
• The Santam Digital Support Hub is available for any technical or navigational support. For further enquiries, contact them at [email protected] or on 0860 111 370.
We are excited about the benefits this functionality can bring to the growth of your business and overall service levels to clients and encourage you to share news of this channel with all your clients.

Over the following few months we will also be driving an online campaign to encourage you and clients to download, register on and use the Santam self-service platforms.
