The top 5 money mistakes South Africans make

1. Living Beyond Their Means
Too many people spend more than they earn, relying on credit for lifestyle expenses—creating a dangerous debt cycle.

2. No Emergency Fund
A lack of savings for unforeseen events (like car repairs, retrenchment, or medical bills) pushes people into expensive debt.

3. Ignoring Retirement Planning
Only around 6% of South Africans can retire comfortably. Many delay investing for retirement, thinking it’s “too early.”

4. Over-Reliance on Store Credit & Personal Loans
Store cards, payday loans, and credit facilities are misused for non-essential purchases—often at high interest rates.

5. Not Tracking Spending
Budgeting is often neglected. Without knowing where money goes, it's difficult to save, invest, or reduce expenses.

Let’s break the cycle and start your financial wellness journey today!

Don’t Leave Your Legacy to Chance!

Did you know that over 70% of South Africans pass away without a valid will?

This can lead to unintended consequences for your loved ones.

Here’s why having a will is essential:

You decide who inherits your assets—not the law.

Protect your partner—especially if you’re unmarried or your will isn’t updated.

Nominate a guardian for your minor children.

Prevent family disputes over your estate.

Speed up the process with a professional executor.

Don’t wait! Secure your family’s future today.

"Better Late Than Never!"

While this might describe my delay in sharing this, it’s also a reminder that it’s never too late to take control of your retirement planning.

The 2024 Annual PPS Retirement Summit was a thoughtfully curated experience designed with your future in mind. A perfect blend of insights:

- Politics to set the stage for the economic landscape.
- Philosophy to inspire fresh perspectives.
- Humor to lighten the complex journey of planning ahead.
- And a few reality checks to keep it all grounded.

This isn’t just about financial planning—it’s about securing peace of mind for the life you envision.

If you missed it, stay tuned for more highlights. And remember, planning for retirement is one thing you’ll never regret starting—even if it feels a bit late!

When you’re no longer around, what will happen to your assets, debts and dependents?

This is an important question that needs careful consideration. By putting a personalised estate plan and an updated and executable will in place, you can help to ensure that assets will be transferred to your dependents in accordance with your last wishes.

By conducting an estate analysis you can determine the cost of winding up your estate and make the necessary provisions.

Speak to us now to help you draft a personalised estate plan and ensure a lasting legacy for your family.

Two-Pot Retirement System: From 1 September 2024, your retirement savings will be divided into three pots: the "vested" pot, the "savings" pot, and the "retirement" pot.

Withdrawal Rules: You can withdraw (minimum R2000) from the savings pot once per tax year, but it will be subject to your marginal tax rate.

Initial Transfer: On 1 September 2024, 10% of your vested pot (up to R30,000) will be transferred to your savings pot.

Tax Implications: Withdrawals are taxed at your marginal rate, and any SARS debt will be automatically deducted.

Withdrawal Process: Once a withdrawal request is made, it cannot be reversed. Use available calculators to estimate the tax impact before requesting.

Exclusions: Those 55+ years old as of 1 March 2021 with provident funds are excluded from the new rules, along with specific funds like beneficiary or unclaimed benefit funds.
